Which barrel profile would act stiffer?

Like I said I find the same frequencies on my targets. And many find OBT works well. And Kolbe. In other words the targets tell the high frequency story while most calculators are in a different realm. I believe the targets.

A 20" bull barrel and a 30" Palma should not display the same frequency on paper. The Vaughn example, kolbe, and varmint ai all have different wave frequencys on the target for their different rifles. Vaughn has the actual target waveforms for a 6ppc and a 6br the ppc is 9.5k Hz the 6br is 6.5 k Hz.

If you are working with similar lengths and profiles I wouldn't doubt you saw similar frequencies on paper.

Yes but you can adjust it out away from muzzle also if you wanted. I adjust it back over barrel myself on the two I have.

Hello,

I'm going to be making a semi custom hunting rifle in 6.5 creedmoor or 7mm08 and I am curious which barrel profile you believe would be more accurate on average and produce the lowest POI shift between loads. Barrel length will be 24".

I'm going to use a criterion barrel savage prefit. Link to the profile diagrams:

I'm okay with the weight of all 3 of these barrels so I'm more curious as to what order you would rank them. Most accurate, middle, least. If you think there is a tie or so close you wouldnt notice a difference select the two best and write the order in your post.

Example my 12lrp 6.5 creed had almost no shift in POI for its different loads testing during load development because its a fluted strait taper. But my friends sporter profile barrel could move 1 1/2" between loads.

So I guess the real question is which do you think would act stiffer a 24" light palma or 24" light varmint, because obviously a standard palma would be better than light palma.

Perhaps this will supply a bit of perspective: In the early '80's, I and others monitored slow motion video of an M109 firing D544 projectiles; the videography was focused on documenting barrel vibration/distortion. There was a lot! Reminded me of a green switch being shaken. Given, the projectile was well over 180 grains (I'm not sure of the BC), but OMG, that was a lot of barrel whip for such a large amount of mass. You may be splitting very fine frog hairs.

Do you believe these barrels will exhibit the same POI shift between load during load dev? If one is better or worse I want to know.

Although it can be calculated, the POI shift difference probably is not significant on a rifle being supported by a shooter.

That's what the experience of most people on here was and my calculator agreed with their experience. The strait palma is the stiffest by about 3.5% but is 7-8% heavier than the lightest. The LV is very slightly stiffer than LP but its almost 7% heavier.

I personally like the LP as its almost as stiff as LV but its significantly lighter and has the possibility of 3/4-24 threading at 24" if I want it.

All I am going to say is: if this is truly a hunting rifle and not just an experiment. You pick your barrel contour and length based on all other factors than what you are discussing here. You look at what you are hunting, where you are hunting, terrain, how far you will be carrying the rifle, rifle overall weight and balance, etc. When you are actually hunting, all these factors will quickly be apparent to you if you made the wrong choices. I dont think shot dispersion of different loads will be on you mind.

No my moms side of the family owns 1500 acres up north around leech lake so ill just go with my uncles. They tend to tag out pretty early.

And the reason I was asking this question is because this is the first rebarrel I will need to do for a rifle with a weight restriction. The target rigs I've rebarreled are all bulls and weigh about 15-16 lbs.

Over the last two years I've worked hard on wind reading and making my rifles' first shots act predictably. I'm around 70% for moa target cold bore at 1k with my savage 12 lrp. Ethical hunting ranges for the 24" 6.5 creed im rebarreling is a pretty short shot for me now.

The more steel in the barrel the better. Weight is a good indicator.

Not true necessarily. A .338 bore barrel of identical external dimensions is both stiffer and lighter than a .224 bore barrel.
