Which Alliant powder for .280 Remington?

I've got a good load for 168's using H4831 in my standard .280 Remington but wanted to tinker with some RL series powders.

I'm thinking RL17, 19, or 22. What has worked for you? I shoot 162 SST's, 168 SMK's, and 168 Bergers mostly.

Anyone have real experience with this?

There is a couple of New kids on the block in the RL series, 23 and 26,
that show promise when running prelim tests thru QL, and Norma has a new kid called 217. ;D

I haven't been able to run any real life tests as I am waiting on the Redding die set and reamer etc, :'(
So I can finish my build.

Tia,
Don

Gun shops around my way (PA) seem to be flush with Aliant Powders. Not so much with Hogdgon.

I'm thinking RL22 for heavy bullets. Problem with loading manuals is .280 load data is low pressure, set up for old autoloaders and pumps. You almost have to figure it out for yourself with a bolt gun.

Update or re-chamber to 280AckleyImproved for BETTER ballistics and load data. A true "bean-field rifle from Kenny Jarret".

When I had mine back in the late 80's and early 90's I shot 162 Hor SP with IIRC 62gr of RL-22. Can't remember velocity but it was super accurate.

Just started playing around with my 280AI for the long range stuff with 162 Amax and 168 bergers. I ran some 45 rounds down range last week and I was getting a little better accuracy with RL 22 that with 4831SC and VV 165. Tried the RL 17 some last year and the SD and accuracy did not seem to be what I was looking for. Actually had three shots with the RL 22 that only had 1/2 inch of vertical at 400 yards. Will be turning around that load in the next few weeks.

I have a good velocities and good standard deviations with RL 22. Been running 168 Berger with 61.2 gr of powder. You can Try this load but I would start low and work my way up to 61.2

Why would you want to tinker with powders that give you velocity swings in different temps. I have both the straight 280 and 280AI H4831 or H4831sc are my go to powder. if that powder didn't work for me then maybe I would look at another
RL19 would be 1st. I also might try the new IMR 4451
