Which Action for New Build - F-T/R

Fairly new (1 year) to mid-range shooting. Currently shooting a Remington SPS tactical, all stock no upgrades. Doing fair now but realize the limitations especially if I want to stretch it out to long range so looking at building a new rifle specific to F-T/R. Also watching the for sale forums but haven't seen much.

Hope this isn't like a Ford/Chevy discussion but looking for input on what action to build on. When I first started thinking about this I was focused on the obvious, get a 700 SA and go from there. Then started reading and digging a little and saw a lot of people talking about different custom actions. Stiffer, truer, etc.... A friend suggested that if I went the custom action route to try to find one that is true Remington clone so it would fit stocks cut for Remington and would use parts like triggers made for Remington, etc.

Open to and appreciate any input. If you want to add anything on stock and/or trigger selection have at it.

A Remington clone would work if you want to reuse your stock but it will need to be re-bedded. I see you have a SPS stock. Is that a H&S Precision stock?

No, it's the Hogue and yes it did rub when it was on bipod but I opened it up so it actualy free floats. Not going to be using any parts off the existing rifle except Sightron SIII scope. Will keep SPS tactical essentially as is, never want to get rid on anything just adding a new one. So this is brand new build, all new parts.

If you are going custom, then go custom.

Most custom actions use the same triggers that would fit a Remington. But I doubt you will be interchanging triggers or actions. Get a custom action regardless if it's a Remington clone or not and put a Jewell trigger in it. Thread a cut rifling barrel on it and go to town.

My action choices would be F-Class Panda or a BAT in that order. The Panda is lighter so you would can have a bigger and longer barrel.

My $0.02

I recently built a tube gun with a pierce action and its unbelievable. and affordable.

Every single guy on the line at my range that has cycled it has lifted an eyebrow. Guys shooting pandas and bats. not saying its all that, just saying. The guys at pierce make an incredible action, compare the price before you jump in, you wont regret it.

Swing the bolt on a Barnard P-O2 & you'll never go back to an action that accepts a Remington pattern trigger group-again!!

Thanks for all the responses. Will look at all of these and see if I can make a good informed decision and get started with the build.

Its a regular pierce action for tube guns. Its a thing of beauty though, there's incredible work coming out of their shop, its surprising you dont hear more guys talking about them, couldnt possibly be more please with the product they provided and they just the nicest guys in the universe to work with. Highest recommendation possible...

Looks like I'm going tubegun route with stock from Eliseo and Pierce action. Will take a while before it shows up here but will make sure to post pictures and review when it arrives.

suspect you'll be happy:

Good looking rig! Everyone I've talked to who has one really seems happy with them and they say they shoot. Wait time for piece parts isn't too bad either. Probably looking at something around 90-days.

absolutely shoots... Shot these off a bench at 100 yd working up loads, not wallet groups either, this is totally repeatable in consistent conditions (or if you can read conditions well which I cant)

Yep, that's exactly what I'm hoping for out of this one. Is that a Konus spotter? If so, I better watch stock color I pick or people will start confusing our pictures. I'm not decided on color yet, yellow is right up there along with gun metal gray or two color black with blue. All metallic. Have you seen any others up close that you realy liked color wise?

Yes, Borden and Pierce both make an action with a few tweaks specific to the Eliseo stock. Eliseo has several options for different actions but I think these two are only ones actually making changes to their normal actions so they're drop in fit w/ no modifications. I did look at both and quite honestly ended up going with Pierce because John has built a lot of these and is actually using the same setup for some of his competition guns. May be same story for Borden but after talking to John on the phone I didn't have any doubts he was going to be putting mine together.

Follow up review of all piece parts and overall build will probably be February but I will post and let everyone know how it all turns out.

Its a konus scope. I want to have the only yellow rifle in the world, so dont build one ;)

If you ask gary he can provide the link for the powder coat paint he uses, there are almost exactly one bajillion colors he can spray on there, I went batty trying to pick the right one. Rifle looks insane in direct sunlight, he did a superior job painting it.

Checked my total rifle weight this morning
Eliseo B1 stock - fully assembled
Barnard P action with trigger
NF 12x42 BR scope (caps, knob covers, & battery removed)
Bartlein 308 1x12 32" med-palma barrel
Sinclair adj-elevation Bi-pod

Total weight 17lb 8oz
Next F/TR season should be fun - any poor shooting scores will point to me (not unusual for me)

rinoray, thanks for checking and posting the weight info. I should be safe, my barrel will be heavier but action lighter so hopefully that evens things out to be about the same as yours.

Mammoth, sorry but I think I'm going to have a yellow gun too. I spent way too much time looking at all the colors too and then saw 02 Corvette yellow. It matches the car in the garage, I have to do it. I think I'm going to do yellow/black mix though so not exactly the same.
