Which 6mm, what bullet, for F-class

garandman

Bolt Gun Bodacious
Thinking about re-barrelling my 6.5CM as an F-class gun. The # of 6mm calibers is staggerring. I'm not looking for hottest / fastest, more like something super proven and reliable (like 6.5 CM is) 1,000 yard, maybe 1200.

Also, what bullet weight / BC should I be thinking? Light and fast / slow and stable?

ETA: this will not really be a competition gun, more just to hit a torso sized target at distance.

Any helps appreciated.

At 600 yards 6br, 6bra, 6 dasher are competitive. I shoot a dasher with Bart's bullets 103gr. I also shoot it at 1k (shoulder issue), but I don't care how good you are or think you are, you will not be competitive with the 7mm aka .284 + 180 hybrids - they will eat your lunch.

I use 115 DTACs for 1000 and 109 Berger LRHT for 600. The way 110 ATips shoot at 100, i am going to give them a try. I have shoot 1200 meters steel with 112 Barnes Match Burners. They held elevation perfectly and once i got the wind figured out i hit a 1x1 ft plate at 1200 on the 3rd shot. So they are a good consideration

i am shooting a 6x47 Lapua

^^^^^^^^^^^^ 7"-7.5" twist.

6 Dasher has really cuaght my attention, but it *might* still yet be too niche' - y. Too hard to get components (brass esp)

6x47 seems more common place, but admittedly, I'm overwhelemd by the sheer number of 6mm out there.

Didn’t a dasher just win the national match, some 1k fclass deal?

The Dasher and BRX are the two most popular 6mm's in F Open and for damn good reason. The bigger 6's just burn more powder and don't agg as well over long strings In F Open. Don't confuse bigger cartridges that do well in sling for the accuracy required in F class. There is factory Dasher brass, BRX has to be fire formed. 105 Berger, 107 Sierra or 109 Berger or any of the boutique 103-105's. If you get a good lot of 110 Sierra's they can also shoot very well. 1-7"or 7.5". 27"-32" long. RL16 Or Varget. Out to about 800 they hang pretty well with the bigger cartridges after that you had better be the better man at reading wind. At 1K if the guys shooting 6.5's and 7's aren't having a good day and your on your game you can win or place at a local level. For midrange they can hang very well unless it's really windy.

Excellent info... thanx. Prolly my only competition will be me....mostly cuz I'll be shooting alone, not in matches, trying to beat myself. :)

I've shot a lot of 6mm at 1K in F class and you'll have a ton of fun! Ultimately I went to a 6.5 shooting heavies for 1K but occasionally still shoot the BRX for LR. In fact I'll be shooting it this weekend just because it's so fun.

I'm shooting a .243 Wssm with 115 Dtac's Moly. 3050 fps. had to sort Winchester Brass. 42.0 grs H4350.
Sharp shoulder long neck? Works for me! 28" Krieger, 1-7, Rem Varmint contour.

@garandman: As @sdean above says, the 6mm Creedmoor is the easy button for you. If you are using bushing dies you just need a new bushing and can continue to use your 6.5 Creedmoor sizing and seater dies AND BRASS!

I started F-Open with a 6.5 Creedmoor as that is what I was set up to shoot at the time and have subsequently rebarreled that rifle as a 6mm Creedmoor fun gun. Much less recoil and superb accuracy out to 1500 yards on steel here in low-altitude Georgia.

I wouldn't use it as a competition rifle for anything serious but, if you're looking for a performance boost over the 6.5CM with all the factory support in the form of brass, ammo & etc. the 6mm CM is hard to beat.

The Berger 105 Hybrids are great and I have enjoyed great performance on steel and game using Hornady 108 ELD-Match bullets. Berger's 105 VLD is also fantastic but they can be frustrating to get tuned. There are many other great bullets but, those are the three I have direct experience with.

You've got fun decisions and a fun project ahead. Have fun with it!
