Which 22 rifle

Most of the Remington 500 series are very accurate and affordable. I have a 581 I got for 250 that is very accurate fro small game.
I bought a plain Jane 581 for cheap a few years back. Same action, trigger, etc., as the 541 versions. It’s a wood stock (birch?) had already been banged around, so no worries there. The rifle had a low enough price that I wouldn’t feel bad hacking off the barrel to truck cab proportions, should I so desire.

Yes they do have a long barrel and that may be a truck rifle issue. The only thing that bothers us is red squirrels attracted to our bird feeders. I don’t mind them eating seed but get a bit hot under the collar when they want to build nests in our vehicles cabin air filter area. Only had to deal with 3 this winter but over 20 last. Their habits are really pretty destructive.

I use Norma’s new leadless ammo and put them on the compost pile. Most quickly disappear to the ravens.

My guess is birch stock also. Not a rifle you would care about putting dings in. Very accurate with subsonic ammo.

I have a number of CZ's, Anschutz and Ruger. Love them all but my truck gun is the Ruger American Rimfire in stainless. Model 8351 is the stainless version. I don't need to worry about it bouncing around.

I have had an itch for a different 22 lately but do not know which one I would like.
I have had a Bergara .It shot very well but did not like it.
I have been looking at CZ varmint and the Tikka. Looks like the cz would be a good one because I like wood stocks and not really fond of the plastic on the Tikka . What I really like is functionality and accuracy , which brings me to you guys.
This gun will be in the truck most of the time for squirrels ,crows and such but it will be on the range a lot too.
Pros, cons would be very helpful in helping me make up my mind.
PS: I do not want to spend $1000.00+ for it just to throw in the truck.
Thank you for your help.
Consider a Bmag for a truck gun and an all around blast to shoot small varmint with. My heavy barrel with a thumbhole stock will shoot 1 moa. 80 yard shot out of the top of a big oak:

Love my Ruger 77/22-VMBZ w/ "heavy" stainless 24" barrel and laminated stock. It's in 22 WMR but the -VBZ is 22 LR. I sent it to Connecticut Precision for accurizing in the '90s, very reasonable and groups tightened considerably. My "can't miss" ground squirrel gun out to 125 yds.

I bolted a Volquartsen 22 LR SS carbon wrap barrel on a Ruger 10 -22...shot 9/16" groups at 100 yds back to back with Wolf Match. Tiny groups at 50 yds...shot it out to 200 yds...lob 22 bullets and hit 22 LR 50 rd empty boxes at 150 yds. With a 10 rd auto loader...no further mods except a stock to take the large dia barrel free floated....light weight carbon fiber with muzzle break and accurate...put 4-24 X FF plane scope on it cause of the accuracy was so good.
But it didn't penetrate a 1.5" dia piece of wood at 200 yds...you could see the bullets lodged in the piece of tree limb...40 gr at 1020 fps...not much of a varmint slayer...but it's accurate. Also liked the 22 LR 60 gr sub sonic...for close range, quiet, rat dispatching.

Semi Auto
It is hard to beat a Ruger 10/22. The magazines are fairly standard now.
The Ruger Target is a wood with blued bull barrel for under $650 via Gun.deals
TC R22 is a Ruger clone with a threaded barrel but the trigger isn't as nice
Winchester Wildcat is an affordable semi auto that is reasonably robust.
Savage has many, possibly too many, and certainly too many to list here.

Bolt Action
$1000 budget will get you a really nice CZ457 varmint plus some accessories
Ruger Precision is a nice bolt gun that takes 10/22 pattern mags
Sako P94s hard to find but very accurate.
Per others the Rem 500 series rifles have some real gems. I have a 541T I enjoy
Many Savage models as well.

For a truck gun you might want to consider a takedown model with suppressor (where allowed)
Be sure the suppressor is user serviceable.

You speak in the past tense. Did you let that gun get away?

Nope, I still have it...just don't shoot much 22LR today...I have so many centerfire firesrms to shoot and test, I built 4 different calibers at one time.
A 358 Win AR10, AR 450 bushmaster 16 twist 185 to 500 gr, 6 twist 5.56 for 95 gr, A 8.6 Blackout 3 twist with sub 300 gr Berger bullets.
A lot of testing to do between snow, wind, cold, and rain...a stormy year. Being a retired machinist I build whatever I want to test, or improve on my existing rifles...so I've tried many calibers from 17 Rem to 50BMG...plus lots of reloading, so not much time spent with 22LR these days.

If you ever feel like selling it, let me know.

No... it was a gift from someone special for my birthday, she asked a shooting friend, about the best barrel to replace the standard Ruger barrel, I was whining about its poor accuracy ...I didn't know she was listening. My birthday was coming up. Imagine my surprise when I unwrapped this long skinny box...
He told her Volquartsen...she bought their most expensive barrel, at the time, complete with muzzle brake. It easily out shoots my Remington bolt action target rifle with most match ammo...auto loader shoots 10 rds in one tiny hole at 50 yds. Took them both out awhile back to confirm, and rightly the bolt gun stays in the safe.
I don't know if they all shoot as well, but I'd have to recommend them just with my limited experience with just one.
