Which .20 caliber?

I have a 20-221FB AI with a 40 degree shoulder. It is nice not having to trim brass. I did it the first time to get them all the same length but haven't trimmed since then, 5-6 firings on them.

Medium load of H4198 in a 21" barrel with 32's is going 3750. I like temp stable powders and don't want to push the brass, but if I used AA2200 I read I can get another 100 fps pretty easily.

I think it is 20 SCC which is pretty much the same case I have. The guy that made it his proprietary cartridge reported 4000 fps with 32's and AA2200 in a longer barrel than mine.

besides the nuisance of constantly trimming brass, trimming brass removes brass (duh) - that has to come from somewhere. so, limiting the case stretching should, other things being equal, increase case life.

and i say this as a reloader that owns no ackleys, but also does not try to shoot at the highest nodes

Greetings all,

thank you all for your replies. Regretfully, the sale fell through. From your replies, cf. Oso's, I understand that the Remington .221 FB action is desirable for non-problematic feeding of the short projectiles (FB, VarTarg).

Thus, I will have to revisit the issue based on acquisition of another (barreled) action/rifle. If it is Remington .221 FB, I will build a VarTarg, if a regular one, I can (1) build 20-222 on the action, (2) build regular 222 and re-barrel the .221 FB to VarTarg, or (3) build 20-222 on the action and re-barrel the .221 FB to VarTarg, which would simplify reloading components (same bullets).

As I mentioned in another thread, I am partial to Remington 700 action because of my preference for two-stage trigger. If anyone has such a (barreled) action and contemplate sale, please let me know.

Kindest regards,

M

What Remington 700 has a two stage trigger? I prefer two stage myself.

I'm unaware of any Rem 700 that came from the factory with a two stage trigger. If you want a two stage trigger in a Rem 700 you'll have to purchase an aftermarket one.

I have a 20 Practical and a 20 VT. I almost never have to trim the VT brass but the 20 Practical requires frequent trimming. Good thing I have a Giraud trimmer because I shoot a LOT of rounds at squirrels. Next time I'll do 20 Tactical (30 degree shoulder) instead of 20 P.

It makes a huge difference in how often you have to trim. The 20 Practical has the 23 degree shoulder of the 223. Brass grows like crazy. Not so with the 30 degree

Not just shoulder, but body length too. My 20 Vartarg and my 22BR require almost no trimming. My 6.5x47 needs to be trimmed every 3rd firing. All have 30 degree shoulders but the 20 and 22 have shorter bodies.

Brass growth depends a LOT on the type of resizing dies you choose to use.
Full length with the neck button WILL pull the necks longer with every up stroke.
Precision Shoulder Bump Dies don't pull the necks longer.
I have BR brass that's been resized 20/25+ times and still no trimming needed.

FORSTER Precision Products. All mine are shoulder bump bushing dies.
Use them but somewhere down the line if the bolt starts getting snug on closing you will need to full length resize or body size.
IMHO, some of the best out there.:)
