Which 20 Cal?

I need input on a 20 cal to go with. Here are my restrictions;
1. I dont want to fireform
2. I want to have good brass available
3. I need it to feed from an internal box magazine (approximately .223 size)
4. No 20 Practical or 20 tactical, I already have a .223 and dont want to get the cases mixed up.

I was thinking 20 BR but dont know how it would feed from a magazine or about barrel life.

I would love to go with the 20 VarTarg, but hear it is hell getting it to feed out of a magazine. Any suggestions? This is also posted on Sabier.com

204 ruger with match prepped (yes you will probably need to do it) nosler custom brass is probably as good as your going to get out of that setup. You wont get a 20BR to feed from a 223 mag, only a 243/308 one. Other option is a 20-222.

if you already have a .223 I'd look real hard at the 20 Vartarg. You will not be disappointed. teh 20 BR will require fire forming but another must have is a 20 PPC.

+ 1 on .204 Ruger.

I won the UK Benchrest Assoc 'Factory Sporter' class championship last year with a Savage 12 LRPV in .204.

You have both Nosler Custom and Norma brass available - both very good indeed. 0.2-0.4" groups are available from 40gn Bergers in my rifle, and the 40gn Hornady V-Max isn't that far behind.

I always thought the Hornady/Ruger design case was over-long and .222 / .223 based wildcats would be better, but the .204 does perform as is with a bit of tuning. It's very tolerant too, and we know it feeds well even if my experience is limited to a single-shot rifle.

I will say my 20-222 based 20 Duster perform quite nicely.

I'm a 20 caliber whore so take that for whats its worth

204 meets your needs easier than others, plus the fact it is far more readily available is another factor to consider..

Love mine and want another.

I have 7 20 cals abd the only ones I dont have to fire form in the 204 . Even the 20br should be fire formed I beleave any case altered should be fire formed to get its full potentol when you change or alter the case!
Good luck
I prefer my br over most of the 20 for most of my shooting.
Good luck Kevin

.20 VT !!! SO easy a cave man can do it...

Quiet, No recoil, definately the most efficient of the .20s

And BALLS ON accurate with just about any load I've tried

.204 ruger get my vote if you want factory ammo.
THE FACTORY AMMO HAS NOT SHOT GOOD FOR ME IN HE 204.
MY COOPER 204 SHOOTS MID .3 AND BETTER WITH RELOADS.
THE 20 VT IS A VERY NICE ROUND. I HAVE A BARREL (1-11T)
FOR THE VT THAT CAME OFF A TURED REM.(SOLD THE ACTION).IF YOU LOAD THE VT HOT!! BRASS WILL BE A PROBLEM.
I WOULD LOVE TO BUILD A 20 (BEGGS) ON THE LAPUA 220 RUSSIAN CASE,BUT YOU WOULD HAVE TO HAVE THE PPC BOLT FACE. ANYTHING ON THE LAPUA BRASS IS GREAT.

JB NICE TO KNOW THE 20VT FEEDS WELL IN THE CZ MAG,ALTHOUGH WHEN I BUILD IT WILL BE A SINGLE SHOT LPRB VIPER DROP PORT ACTION.

I shoot a 20VT and a 20 Tactical, my son has a 204 Ruger. By the sounds of what your looking for the 204 Ruger fits your needs.
I can't comment on the feeding issues of the 20VT repeater as mine is a Cooper Jackson Varminter single shot but I really like this cartridge!

I like the 20X47 Lapua that I built and it feeds from a mag. but you still have to fire form that's just all there is to it.
