Which 17 HMR rifle

Looking for a plinker, around 250-300$
What would be the most accurate, good gun to pick up?

Are the savage A17's any good?

Savage 93s are in that price range. 17HMRS are picky on ammo. Do a search on this forum. This topic has been beaten more than half to death.

I've had ruger, cz, and savage. A lot of people are happy with their savage 93r17s. I've had two good ones and three not so good. You do the math.
Cz 452 or new 455 are really nice, but a little more money and triggers are not great.
I've been shooting ruger American for about a year and couldn't be happier. Very good value. Great trigger, 9 rounds flush rotary mag, and accuracy is good. Highly recommend the ruger.
Also had an early a17. Worst trigger I have ever seen. And fussy w ammo. Sold it.

Might also want to ask in the rimfire forum....
And check rimfire central. Everyone is happy to share their opinion...

With all due respect to 1raggedhole, for God's sake, if you want unbiased facts, don't go to RFC. One question will get you ten pages of different answers, all sworn to be the correct ones.

I have a HR sportster. Every time I get close enough to smak a woodchuck I get dirt and woodchuck blood on the stock. Otherwise it is useless. Saves on ammo though...

The only one I would stay away from is the Ruger. Their stupid two piece bolt that may or may not be shimmed correctly makes getting an accurate one a crap shoot. maybe the American has a different set up but I am not buying one just to find out. I have a CZ 455, bud has a Marlin. Marlin is very nice and accurate .. So is my CZ, but I doubt you'll find a CZ in your price range..

Sorry for the late reply... The ISSC SPA is an Austrian made straight pull action in 17 hmr (&22&22mag available) like the biathlon rifles. Can be found for About $340 in synthetic stock. imported by American Tactical Imports.

Went and looked at the ISSC SPA 17 and it's over 550.00 in a wood stock and not available in a synthetic from ATI.

Back to the original post, 2-300.00 out the door then the Marlin is what I would buy. I like a CZ better and own a Sako Quad and a Martini in that caliber. I have owned 2 Savages in 17HMR for a very short time, and anything in a Contender you're over budget. I'm not a big Marlin fan but when I compare them to a Savage, look at the price, I always wonder why I'm not. They build a quality product that doesn't have that chintzy feel when you handle it and give it a hard look over. First Savage I looked at in 17HMR I found myself wanting to throw the stock away, replace the trigger......and how come the magazine keeps falling out??? Now this is the sub 300.00 synthetic blue rifle. Maybe the laminate rifles with the accutrigger are better, are they under 300.00?
