Where to start

Hey folks I'm "brand new" to the forum and the world of competition shooting.... with this being said I'm looking for direction. First I might start by saying that I spent 8 years in the corps and qualified rifle expert each of those years. I've been around long rifles just about all my life (53yo now) started hunting with my grandfather at 6. I recently received a Weatherby Mark V 30-378 with Leupold optics VXiii 4.5x14 40. I took it out bore sighted it and after putting it on paper and adjusting the dope put a 3 shot group that measured .36MOA at 100 yds. I don't know if that's any good or not but it fired me up again in regards to putting rounds down range where you want them. So here we go! I want to shoot! I've been looking for a new passion and I know this is it, so where do I go? I know there are so many disciplines in the competitive shooting arena and I'm looking for a place to start. I've done a tad bit of research and I like the different strings of fire at 200-300 yds but I'm also intrigued by long range shots as well. So help me...I need a rig, I don't believe its practical to shoot a 30-378 or if you even can. What I do know is that I have always been open to direction and guidance and I know that y'all are some of the worlds best shooters so help a brother out.

Find some local clubs and matches. Go check them out.
Get to know more about the many forms of sport shooting.

When you know what you will be doing we can help.

Also, list where you are. That way we will be able to tell you kinda what is around you. I will be shooting F T/R this year and cant wait. You more interested in benchrest, prone F Class or??

It is fortunate that if you want to shoot 300 yards and beyond, the rifles to shoot prone (F-class / F-Open to be more precise) and the ones to shoot Benchrest CAN be made to do BOTH jobs VERY well indeed! So you REALLY need to decide what kind of shooting you want to do then build a rifle specific for that discipline. F-Class-T/R needs a Bi-Pod of sorts where open is usually shot from a rest much the same a from a benchrest rig. Then there are other disciplines that are more of a "game" like shooting clay pigeons at various distances etc... But if you want to shoot BOTH benchrest and prone, find the discipline(s) where a rifle built for one is also built for the other and you can shoot both!

Oak Ridge, Tn. has a great range and great people that will be glad to help out.
They have Benchrest , mid and long range matches , and others.
Pick out a Savage 6BR F-class rifle and go compete in any match you like !

Read, read, read, and then read some more. If you want to shoot matches, you'll need to find matches in your area, and then choose equipment accordingly.

Just my 2 cents but on caliber I would suggest the 6mmBR Norma or 6.5 Creedmoor. I got a Savage in the Creedmoor. And in the process of building another Savage in 6mmBR. The only reason that I didn't do another Creedmoor is because I didn't want 2 rifles of the same caliber. But I'm still wondering if I should have done a Creedmoor anyway.

And Semper Fi.

I would start by suggesting that rifle shooting has two major splits rimfire and centerfire. Traditionally the rimfire is limited to 100 yards maximum and centerfire ranges go beyond 1,000 yards hard to find as well. Then there are paper targets bullseye, much less common action shooting most rimfire.

I am sure I have left some major group out pardon me in advance

Welcome to the forum! Thank you for your service!
I would suggest you study up on the diminutive little 6br. It’s a sweet little cartridge that will shoot every distance out to 1000. It has mild recoil, doesn’t burn up a lot of powder and is simple to load.
Get a reloading set up and ONE good gun! Learn with that before you get carried away with the vast variety of different cartridges. Here…we call that the rabbit hole. It’s deep and expensive! Like a gorgeous woman, it’s very alluring! Tread slowly!
Just my 2 cents

Dang it - I was all excited to hear more about that big Weatherby that shoots so good - my 30-378 was not Weatherby’s most accurate rifle, but it sure turned heads at the covered rifle range with the brake installed! Lol
