Where to start w/powder, 6 x 47 Lapua?

FN in MT said:
My new 6 x 47 is done and I need to start loading some ammo. A 29", 1-8" HART, DEFIANCE action, etc. I'm assuming with the slightly smaller bore vs the 6.5 I can go with slower powder?

With 105's and 107's where should I start with powder? I'm using H-4350 with my 6.5 x 47 and 130 VLD's but it's been tough to locate.
I do have an 8# jug of both Varget and RE-17.

Thank You in advance.

h4350 got me the best results on paper, not sure on speed, haven't checked yet. rl17 did just a little bigger groups. I'm about to try some 4831, I forget if I got imr or h though. h4350 I started at 37 up to 39.0, and it liked 37.5 and 38.5 out of the 5 loads, still plan to narrow that down. rl17 got similar results using the same loads. I've been using 108 bergers, and a few 107 smk but they didn't do as well.

I'm fighting my second one, had one in 1-8 twist and tried the Bergers and A-Maxs with 4350 and R17, all sorts of seating depth and charges, never got squat out of it, chalked it up to crappy 5r rifling, threw the barrel in the river.

Guess it's me and this chambering, have a 1-9 now and trying to get the 95g tmks to work, trying 4350 so far with no consistent results.

38.5 H4350 works real well for me.
Works as good as I can shoot it anyway. View attachment 979616View attachment 979617I'm still learning this stuff and this was only 300yards.

If that was at 300 after subtracting .243 from your group size I would divide it by 3 to get your MOA for example your first pic group b that measured .741 would actualy be .244 MOA @ that distance. If I'm wrong someone will tell me shortly.

Good shooting regardless!

I have a 6x47L with a .236 bore kreiger 1:7.5. It has a bore rider throat and the Sierra 107's just plain shoot with IMR 4451. I'm at 3140ish and have shot it at 3070 both loads producing phenomenal groups out to 600. Haven't got the 105 hybrids tuned yet and haven't had a lot of time to. All this with those cheap wolf primers. Sunday best group was three shots at 600 yards covered by a quarter. Avg. for the day was 1.25".

I have 26" Brux. Since you have a 29" barrel I recommend H4831sc.
Over a year ago I ran quickload because I couldn't find h4350 in a pinch. Suprised that it said it was faster than H4350. 32 fps faster at 3062 vs H4350 at 3030 node. I can run a 3140ish node but it hammers brass and you will only get 3-5 firings in my chamber.
H4831sc runs slightly less pressure than H4350. You should be able to really take advantage of a 3080 to 3100 node without being over pressure in that node.
That way you can get 30+ loads on your brass if you anneal regularly. Save time on neck turning, brass prep, $$$, and more time shooting.
I will note that ES and SD were a couple FPS higher than H4350 and 4451 does have the lowest spread of 3 and smallest group at .2s.
H4831sc was in .4 and .5s groups wise.

Note: When using extruded powders (never with ball) it is safe to get between 105 to 108% load density from quickload when using 1,2,3 load comparison button for comparable barrel time loads.
PEEPS, quickload will save you time and money!!! In a pinch I can run a comparable load, load it and shoot (velocities may not match exactly so make dope charts with a grain of salt) and I will be really close.

H4831sc should save some barrel life fwiw.

Another note for those new to h4831sc:

If you are running a Savage, save yourself some headaches with FTF and brass showing over pressure when it isn't, by getting PTG bolt head!!!

I just chambered up a Savage with a 24" barrel for a guy. I had three powders worth trying; 100V, 4451 and Varget. Since H4350 is unobtainable I went with 4451 which is supposed to share the same data.

The rifle is a 1- 9 1/4" twist so there was no point in trying 105s and such VLDs. I had some 100 grain Hornday hunting bullets, 65 grain Vmax and 55 grain Ballistic tips. I loaded incrementally until I saw obvious pressure with each powder. My max velocities are as follows: 39.5 grains 100V @ 2995, 39.5 grains 4451 @2969. With the 65 grain Vmax I was able to get 3624 fps with 40.0 grains of Varget. The 55s were about 100 fps faster.

Either 105 Bergers have so much less bearing area that they are easily pushed faster or some of you guys must be shooting 32" barrels to get 3100 fps + with 105s.

My 22" gun's favorite load w/ H-4350 runs 105 VLD's at 3030.

My 26" gun's favorite load is exactly the same as the 22" gun, and runs the Hybrids at 3125.

Hard to call judgement on pressures when you haven't run the Bergers.

An update on me and the 6x47L.

I'm at 39.8 of H-4350, 105 bergers - .010" off the lands. CCI-450 giving me 3030 fps.
Groups at 100 yds in the .2's !! For ME that is simply amazing. MOST accurate rifle I have ever owned.

Built a .223AI which has been taking up my time lately. Only shot the 6x47 twice at the local LR shoot. Did just fine.

I started with IMR 4350, looks so good, that I doubt I'll try much else (have 10lbs). My friend has switched to 4451 from IMR 4350. He says accuracy is the same (great) hoping to prolong the tubes. I will try some VV n160 because I can't stop wondering how green the grass might be.

FYI IMR 4350 starts to show pressure just as the powder crunches. In my rifle that's at 41gr just 1gr over my load.

Well I tried some VV n160, shouldn't have, incredible accuracy, very expensive. My tac rifle is shooting teens off bags, low nodes, mid nodes, high nodes... awesome. Three other 6x47s, one formerly owned by me and two owned by friends, showed a definite preference for n160, so I had to try it. I'll update this thread with chrono data when I finalize my load but for now I have great loads at 40, 41.3, and seems like I'm about to hit another (tightening up @ 41.7) around 42gr. No pressure signs, but it is definitely climbing. Case heads have a little rub from the bolt face, but no ejector swipes. I'm not sure I can overpressure this case with this powder, but I'll try
Lapua brass necked down with a bushing die .269, fired, and resized .268
CCI BR4
Berger 105 hybrids
.020" off

Well apparently I can max out pressure using n160, this load is hot, left ejector swipes on two of the three cases. But it certainly shoots: 42.5 gr and the tightest group yet, although not by much. I'll have to find a bit lower node. The oehler was struggling as the sun was down, but velocity of the 42.3 gr load was 3160-3168, so I'm guessing this was 3175-3180. This is out of a 26" Bartlein .237 5R.

we now have 150 rounds down a new gun and it is shooting half moa and the speed is up to 3100fps with 40gr h-4350. we did a new load today with berger 105 hybreds with 40gr h-4350 and shot at 900yds and it did into half moa with 2 different shooters. love this gun. the only problem is it outshoots the programs we have run for it but who cares we can make it work.
