Where to shoot near DC area?

Hi,

Where do folks around the Washington, DC area go to shoot? Many of the places I have checked out do not seem to place a high priority on rifle shooting and do not offer much more than a 100 yard range with a few shooting stations.

What kind of shooting are you looking for? I shoot 100-300yd Benchrest all over the area. I live in Fairfax and I'm a member of 2 local shooting clubs. One is in Centreville and the other in Manassas. Longer range shooting is a bit more of a drive, although Quantico offers a couple different Match shooting disciplines.

I would like to take up benchrest shooting but I'm somewhat overwhelmed with the startup cost. My other interest is prone shooting with my .308 either off a bipod or with aling.

Lots of luck finding a place to shoot around Washington, DC! When I left in 1974,haven't looked back since!) the closest place that you could even shoot centerfire was clear up at Poolesville!

Damn good response from gunamonth. I'll add to the list: FFX Rod & Gun also has an active IBS program as well as smallbore, highpower and as many other shooting sports you can imagine. It's equally as close if not closer than Thurmont. Black Creek Shooters in Richmond also has an active IBS program. York IWLA in PA also holds IBS matches. Other ranges I know of that don't have any formal match programs include Arlington/Fairfax IWLA and Stafford IWLA. Both have 100yd ranges. Most of the IWLA's are inexpensive to join.

Bridgeville is probably the closest of all the clubs to offer up to 600yd shooting and they are currently working on a 1000yd range. My understanding is that membership fees are very reasonable.

As far as Benchrest goes, come on out to a match and talk to some of the shooters. Trust me, BR shooters aren't rich as a general rule, most of us are just good ole boys tryin' to put em all through the same hole. There are matches once a month all year at FFX, one this Sunday as a matter of fact. Thurmont holds matches once a month from April through November. Check the IBS webpage for listing of all the local matches.
