Where to find Jack O’Connor articles?

Thanks for all the replies. And I did actually see that book hogpatrol listed on Amazon, I will probably pick it up.

Also, I have heard of others such as Capstick as well. Can’t wait to read him and others too.

My favorite O'Connor book is Sheep and Sheep Hunting.

Check ebay, books can often be found on there for reasonable prices.

Jack O'Connor liked and used a lot of different cartridges. He wrote later in life that it got his hackles up when he heard anyone quipping that the .270 wasn't any good for hunting. He said that it was a decent Elk cartridge but might be a little small for Moose. O'Connor was a good ballistician and always qualified his statements about cartridges for hunting needing to have good bullets and bullet placement.

He hunted Coyotes and Jackrabbits, often running in the desert, for practice and got pretty good at hitting them. He used just about every cartridge in vogue at the time. He is famous for his defense of the .270 but truth tell he liked a lot of other stuff as well. Like anything in history you have to look at it from the perspective of the time he hunted and how he hunted. He took pack trips often for months at a time into secluded places and went on a few safaris. He didn't claim to be an expert on African fauna but he did speak his mind as to the calibers that worked for him and Eleanor his wife. She probably killed more game than most of us could imagine. They hunted in a time when game was plentiful, laws were lenient and access was relatively easy.

Outdoor writing at the time was pretty competitive business and lots of rivalries were formed. He didn't mince his words and you didn't have to look up his butt to figure out what was on his mind. He was a champion of the Classic rifle stock. He was one of my favorites. I also like a lot of other writers back then and currently. He was quite a guy.

Anyone know of a source of Jack O’Connor articles? I have always heard of the “Dean, of gun writing” but I have never had the opportunity to read any of his stuff.
Try to find his book titled “Horse And Buggy West”. His autobiography-outstanding book/hard to find but worth it.

No doubt the success of the 270 Win is directly related to Mr. O'Connor. The 270 back then as well as to day is a marginal cartridge for elk hunting, just not marginal in jack's hands. I remember, years ago reading an article where some state asked Jack to determine if the .224 caliber was humane enough for deer sized game. His answer was no because he felt all conditions had to be ideal for it to be humane, although he stated during his tests he had killed 49 deer with 49 shots from a 220 Swift. Not to many hunters could do this.

Guns and Ammo in the late 70's I believe. Along with Col. Charles Askins and Elmer Keith.
Don’t think so. He died on January 20, 1978.

He became full-time Gun Editor for Outdoor Life and remained there until 1972. Shortly thereafter he joined Petersen’s Hunting magazine as executive editor until his death.
