Where to find Jack O’Connor articles?

Anyone know of a source of Jack O’Connor articles? I have always heard of the “Dean, of gun writing” but I have never had the opportunity to read any of his stuff.

He was pretty verberous and descriptive. You could tell he loved the outdoors and was a different breed of writer then many in the magazines today. I haven't read hardly any of his articles or books but you can find them for a price on amazon of coarse.

First book I ever read through and through. The America Rifleman by Jack O'Conner. Wish I still had it. I'm going to do a search. He loved the 270 and felt it the ultimate elk cartridge. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for reminding me. Mike

Paraphrasing here... in talking about varmint hunting really "...hunting is a riveting sport, the first time a man pulls up a crow into his crosshairs way off yonder and see's the ruffling of feathers after he pulls the trigger, the woman must keep a keen eye on him from then on as he'll be learning hocus-pocus with the checkbook to pull in things like scopes, reloading tools, and other things not in the budget" - Jack O'connor

I used to read O'Connor every month in, if memory serves me correctly, "Outdoor Life" hunting / fishing magazine. I believe it is owned by the "Peterson Publishing Company". If I am correct, you should be able to contact them and get O'Connor's articles out of their archives. They will also have a list of his books and where you may be able to purchase them.

His books are great reading!! He lived in Arizona and then later in Idaho. I have read all his books and some of his writing also very hurmorus at imes and he popularized the speed and Hydrostatic shock of the 270 win and he was a great rifleman who shot very good! RW

Check your local library they should have some of his books. He was the gun editor for Outdoor Life for a lot of years but IMO the best reading is his books. His writing had the unique ability to take you with him on his hunts, I have been to a few of the places in the Yukon that he wrote about and it was almost like I had been there before from his descriptions.

Jack O'Conner was probably responsible for the sale of more 270 Winchester's than anyone on earth.

( I have a two volume boxed set O' Conner & Carmichael from the 60's. SHOOTING by O'Connor & Modern Rifle by Carmichael ...if anyone has an interest in them. Not bad shape at all.)

The old saying should read “baseball, hotdogs, apple pie and Jack O’Connor. Truly one of the greatest outdoor writers of all time. I remember as a boy growing up I could not wait for the outdoor life magazine to come in with his article, he had a way of writing that made you feel like you were right there with him, he really did.You won’t be disappointed in spending some time reading his stuff, my local library has a number of his books. And you will find out soon that he was truly from “the old school”

I have 2 books (both edited by Jim Casada) that contain magazine articles written by Jack O’Connor.

“Classic O’Connor-45 Worldwide Hunting Adventures,” published by Sporting Classics.

“The Lost Classics of Jack O’Connor,” published by Liveoak Press.

I think you would like them, I know I do.

I like Jack O'Connor's writing but not sure I got any take aways from it. I have a pretty good hunting and shooting book collection. The most enjoyment and mileage I've gotten is out of Peter Capstick books on hunting in Africa.
