Where do you compromise? Optic or mount?

Speaking in terms of hunting rifles, where would you find yourself compromising?

Example: I acquired a new Winchester Model 70 Super Grade. I like to mount my scopes low. As low as the optic will allow preferably. For this rifle I selected a new Optika6 2.5-15 from Meopta. The glass is very good, reticle useful, adjustments firm and tactile. The problem comes from the scope's power adjustment ring. It's huge. I would need rings at least 1/4" higher than the ones in using right now with a Bushnell 4-16. This leaves a half inch gap between the objective bell, and doesn't let me get tight down on the comb like I prefer. I can return the scope no problem, but am I going to be able to find optical quality like this at the same price point (sub $600)?

If it don't fit, it don't work.

Just try a sock with a hole in the toe, or shorts that are too short.

Find a scope that fits

Similar thought processes you and I. Which goes back to: what can I replace it with in this price bracket that'll fit the bill? I hate holes in sox, your toe has to play with it all day.

What is the ring hitting on ? The ocular/diopter and power rings are rubber(?) and you might be able to pop it off and cut it, if you don't mind modifying the scope.
Yes, Meopta glass is very good.

The power adjustment ring on my Sightron STAC is pretty large. 4-20X50.
I mounted it same as my other scopes.
EGW one piece mount. These in themselves are rather tall.
Vortex Viper aluminium low rings.
This setup even allows the low rings on my wife's Savage 110 FP with the Sightron SIII 10-50X60.

Best of luck!

I should note that Vortex has discontinued the Viper series of rings. Making them harder to find.
I'm going to try some of EGWs rings.

I use the same viper low rings and 20 moa EGW mount and was happily surprised when I replaced a sightron 8-32x56 to 10-50x60 and still had clearance,

Folks, this is why you check things before getting all bent out of shape. I popped off the Bushnell Engage 4-16 (side note: if Bushnell had put the tool-less locking turrets on the Elite/6500 series I'd have snatched one of those up without time for second thoughts) to do some measuring. Turns out, the rings I had were not in fact low but rather medium (.175" tall). 9440.jpeg

This ring and base combo gives me .482" from the top of the rear bridge to the scope tube and feels good coming to the shoulder. I wanted to see just how high the Meopta would have to sit to clear the Winchester's bolt handle so I cleared everything off the rifle and grabbed some modeling clay. 9442.jpeg

What I found was that I was in fact overreacting thinking I wouldn't be able to comfortably mount this scope. Doing some homework with the clay, a dial caliper, and some internet spec searching tells me all I need is a set of Leupold high rings (.637" tall with base) or Talley medium lightweights (.633" tall).

Sorry folks, crisis averted; much ado over a hundred and fifty thousandths.
