WHEN WAS THE SMITH & WESSON 357 MAG MODEL 58-1 MADE ?

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this. I just aquired a S&W 357 mag revolver with a 4" barrel model 58-1 Does anyone know much about this handgun, like when it was made, and how much it might be worth, it is in real nice shape, it is blued, and has a different grip on it. the grip is either plastic or ivory with a naked lady on each side. How can tell if it is plastic or ivory ?

Short Range,
You must have your Model numbers wrong. The Smith and wesson Model 58 was never chambered in 357 Mag it is the MP version of the 41 Mag.

Post an accurate description & I'll get back to you with some info. Smith made 2 .357 versions. The Model 19 was built on the K frame, and the model 28 the N frame.

fdshuster,
Sorry there buddy but you left out the very first 357 mag produced by Smith and Wesson, varients of it are still produced by Smith. The Model 27 was the first 357 Mag.

That's true. The Model 27 had the high gloss blued finish, the Model 28, also known as the Highway Patrolman had a dull matte finish. I was just trying to stay with the basics.

Thought he could tell the difference between the "2" in the Model 28 and the "5" in the model 58.

To give a detailed description of every variance including barrel length, finish, sights, grips, etc. would fill this page.

Easiest solution would be to call S&W, give them the serial number & they will provide the answer.

You are right about the J-Frame's, although I don't agree there are pleasant to shoot. And Smith has made many 357's the J-frame model 63 being one then there is also the Model 13, the model 65 and sevreal varients in the newer Smiths. I have been collecting Smith's for many years, and probably the one I like the best I just aquired a model 53. Been looking for a long time though....

the model # is stamped on the gun : model 58-1 the 5 is larger than the 8 and the 1, but that is what it's stamped. I did go on-line before I started this post, tried to look up this model #, and I found some discussion that they did make both a model 58 and model 58-1 they talked about that years ago there was a recall on both of these models to replace the fireing pins, but I didn't fine out when they were made, or aprox. value. I did take the grips off, and they have : SKO AJE India carved on the inside of each grip, so I assume they are ivory.

Short Range, First thing you need to do is find out what caliber it is. If it is indeed a 357 mag then it is "NOT" a model 58 or 58-1. The 58 Model's are all 41 Mag's. Now it could be mis-marked or stamped, if that is in fact the case then some collectors will pay a huge amount for a mis-marked Smith and Wesson, like in some cases 10 times as much.

On the other hand if it is a Model 58-1 then it is a 41 Mag and not a 357 Mag and nothing special and is still being made today usually a used one can be picked up for anywhere from $400.00 to $500.00 or so dollars depending on condition. Brand new they are $599.00 or there abouts and the nickle ones go for a little more.

Now if it was a Model 58 no dash they can and do bring a premiem I believe they were started to be built in the 60's and production was halted for sevreal years then the model 58 was reintroduced not all that long ago and these are were the dash comes from. Some differences between the dash models and the no dash models that are centered around the cylinder.

" S.&W. 357 magnum " is stamped on the right side of the barrel, "Smith Wesson" is stamped on the left side of the barrel. My brother had this gun for at least twenty years, and my Dad had it before that, and my Dad got it used. It also has "7x910" stamped on it. I took a few pictures to post, but the stamps are not clear enough to see. I will try to contact Smith & Wesson to get the info from them.

The model 58 was in fact chambered in 41 mag. It was manufactured between 1964 and 1977. The San Francisco PD issued them for carry sometime during 1968.

Shortrange -

Howdy !

What JSchmidt said.

Had a M-58 4" that I had pistol smith Dave Schwarze change caibre on; to .357" Mag.

Dave used an M-28 cylinder, and bored-out the original heavy 4" .41Mag barrel; to accept a Douglas
.357" cal "liner". Schwarze used bedding compound to secure liner in the outer barrel.
The gun weighed as-much-as a 5" M-27, was accurate, and handy.

SO... a custom .357Mag based on an M-58 is certainly do-able.

I wnet on to use of a surplus NY State Police M-520, which had th esame fixed-sight "N"-frame, but the skinny 4" tapered barrel seen on othe r.357" cal "N"-frames. AAAccckkk !!!

I had Schwarze install a one-piece custom Douglas Straigt barrel, and never looked baclk.

Regards.

.357Mag

If it is a 357, I bet it is a 28-2. A lot of times you can't tell the difference between a 2 and 5 and 8 in factory stampings.

Hi Jim, It is clearly marked model 58-1 and S.&W. 357 magnum

If the markings are clear, then a mis-stamp on the frame by the factory or a conversion. Please let us know what you find out. I
assume you have checked the cylinder and verified it is a 357 cylinder and a 357 diameter barrel.

I tried to post pictures, but for some reason I couldn't get them to work.

I went to Smith & Wesson forum, they asked me to find the serial # on the bottom of the frame , it is : ADE4499 they said it is a model 581 "L" frame, made in 357 magnum. It was made from 1981 to 1983 Thanks, Steve

It is very easy to replace the barrel and cylinder with parts from a M27 or M28. In years past, many Smith & Wesson handguns were modified for various reasons.

Pachmyer converted hundreds of 38/44 pistols to .357 for LAPD Officers. They weren't allowed to carry .357 so their duty belts had .38 spc ammo and the pistol said .38 spc on it but the rounds in the cyl (and a few extra in a pocket) were .357 Mag.

The 581's are a great service revolver--wish I still had the one I owned in the 80's... :'(
