when to switch to magnum primer

Shooting a 223 for 600 F TR...

Why and when would you want to switch to a magnum primer?? I have Fed 205 and CCI 450's.
Really more curious than anything....
Thanks again

For cartridges whose capacity is > 25 gr.Generally to improve accuracy:
1/ When shooting in <40*F temps
2/ When using spherical powder
From PS mag article in July '08 issue by Mic McPherson "General Primer Recommendation Chart"

I bought some cci 450's 1000 of them to test them against the BR4 because there cheaper for my 223, 6mm br , 30br, and my 308 with lapua palma brass , I only shot 100 of them and I believe they may work just as well, not done testing yet, I have used magnum in a 9mm pistol no problem all year long in USPSA

I don't use magnum primers in anything up to and including 300 wsm. Never had any problems, and I've shot in 0°F weather with 40+ grains ball powder.

That being said, pick one that you have more of and use it. If the loads that are produced aren't up to snuff, try the other primer.

450'S IS MY GO TO PRIMERS I ALSO USE WIN. PRIMERS IN MY VARMINT LOADS BUT ALL MY BR'S 450'S ONLY WITH VERY GOOD NUMBERS

I thought that was a good question as to why and when should you use a mag primer... so how does one know WHEN and WHY....?

I know that my friend and I have the very same 20-250 AI rifles... loaded with the same powder (IMR 4350) ...same bullet... same everything...BUT... he shoots a CCI Mag Primers and gets about 50 more fps then I do with my CCI Br primers.

Can they really make that much difference...?

you've just answered your own question... so long as they're not causing pressure problems no reason not to use them...

Not necessarily - rifles are like women - they are not the same. Take some identical load and try the m in both rifles and see the difference.

To my understanding the main difference between standard and magnum small rifle primers is the cup thickness and not necessarily the brisance.
