when to stop. diminishing return related to optics.

I recently purchased the gun of my dreams. (Sako trg 22) I can say that its everything I hoped it would be and now im at the point of what scope does this thing deserve? I have a vortex viper pst 4-16 ffp scope on it now. I am happy with it but feel like it deserves better. It has a lot of the features I want. Ex. Moa ffp reticle with matching moa clicks. Good clarity. Lots of elevation adjustment. Zero stop and a good illumination design with an off setting between each setting. It also tracks perfectly.
As I look to replace it I find that the only thing I can add to what I have is better clarity and more magnification. Which almost always comes at a cost of another 1000. Basically doubling the price. You guys that may have made the switch similar to where im at was it worth it and where do u draw the line for the law of diminishing returns? Is there a ffp scope that has a open center at the intersection of the crosshairs and uses a glass etched 2nd focal plane fine center? That would be the best of both worlds.

Spending over a grand on a burris scares me. If cabelas gets one and I could return it if its junk maybe id try it. I doubt however it will be comparable to the optics im considering like the razor hd 4.5x27 or a steiner which a friend can get me a deal on. Thanks for the reply. Ill at least keep an eye on the reviews till I make a purchase.

Why not a sightron SIII 8-32x56mm. Great glass for the money and rugged.Lifetime guaranteed.

if you have not exceeded the cost of the rofle on the scope...you are not there yet...

how good are your eyes? glasses, cataracts, 20/20, bifocals,-you can waste your money on scopes you are limited in personal ability to utilize.

If you are happy, be happy.
If charging in to harms way: might consider spending more for double tuff expectations.
If living on the the bench rest line: you need more magnification.
I like to get above 20x even with and probably because my eyes are not that great.
All that being said my usual list of suspects apply: vortex viper/razor, sightron SIII, bushnell elite, nightforce.

"Deserves got nothing to do with it" My two cents and a touch of sarcasm.

When you run out of money.

^^ This^^

Personally I'm not a fan of the huge 50+ mm objectives on my target rifles. I like 44s or less for anything other than my target rifles.

What is your intended purpose.

Hunting I like Swaro's, light, clear, expensive, but with straight MIL reticle subtensions and not what someone thinks your drops might be.

My view on the whole FFP vs SFP thing for 90% of us. If you're trying to use the reticle for holdovers on a center fire rifle you are well past 200 yards, and at those ranges you can crank the magnification up to max where the reticle works anyway. If you're taking a shot at 50 yards on minimum power, who gives a hoot, center it up and send it.

When you consider when and how you might actually use the reticle for holdover/holdoff as long as the reticle works on high power it doesn't matter what it does on low power as long as when you center the reticle at 200 yards the bullet goes there. Which is probably why the guys in the military using NF NXS stuff have never had a problem. Think about it.

That opens up a lot of nice scopes. How much magnification do you need?

Im definitely a sucker for high magnification. I like to see where I hit when shooting paper. However. This is for a 308 trg that I intend on taking to a sniper training school. Where they do have targets at various ranges out to 1000. So a ffp reticle would be helpful.

Question : when to stop. diminishing return related to optics.

Answer: Wrong place to ask this question, this is a forum for those who keep diminishing there wallets :)

When bill gates became the wealthiest man in the world a journalist asked him how much money he needed to be happy his reply. "Just a little bit more money" ;D

I am spending as much on the gun as the scope. NForce is a good one or if your gun is below the 1000 mark there is SWFA. Their mill scopes that they have been releasing lately have been rather impressive. I don't recommend there 20x42 fixed power though. It's optics are not very good compared to all their other scopes.

I thought my Sightron. 10-50 was all I every needed for 600 yard f class. Saturday the mirage was so bad I couldn't see the 10 ring even with the power backed off, it looked like flowing water, and shot horribly because of it. The fella next to me had a s&b 12-50 and could see all the rings at 50x and shot a good round because of that. I now have to sale my truck and walk to work.

Does higher quality glass allow you to run higher magnification In mirage conditions?

No... in high mirage conditions, a smaller objective (or a reducer) is the only thing that will help.

Lens quality has nothing to do with it.
