Wheeler action wrench

potatoe

Silver $$ Contributor
Hey is there any drawbacks to using one of these on a custom 700? They seem to be favored for the tight factory barrels but other than time (setting it up) to take off other barrels is there any bad things about em?

I have had a Wheeler for some years now. They are OK, be sure and use lead or brass shims to reduce marring your action. Frankly I prefer rear entry or side entry wrenches for my match rifles but for military and many factory barrel removal jobs the extra beef is handy. Every bit as important is the barrel vise. The Wheeler with two large studs/blocks/giant nuts works but for me the aluminum jaw types do a better job. The steel bushings from Brownell's work well but you will need a set for every barrel diameter you plan upon working. For me that is at least 15 rifles at any one time. That plus the rosin and lead shims make for a messy job and set up.

I have the Wheeler action wrench. However in removing a barrel (first time off) I prefer the rear action wrench.
Can't recall his name (pbike???) a site member makes these rear action wrenches. I bought one from him and it is 'bullet proof'! (pun intended). Chance of marring an action is zero and the wrench is really well made and tough.
I have had no problems with Wheelers barrel vise.

Pbike257 is the guy you want. However the wheeler is more suited for a factory tight barrel.I use Nylon strapping and cut 2 pieces to fit inside the wrench and dip it in rosin powder, it works great and never leaves a marr or whatever. I don't like lead as it is poisonous.
