What's Your Favorite Vise?

When I worked at the shipyard the machine shop had assorted vice's just about everywhere. The only one I remember is Wilton. When I went on line I found people expect a good sum for a clapped out 4in beater,
My only vise was made in Asia somewhere and was given to me, I cleaned it up with a Dremel tool and with a little primer and hammer tone paint it looks OK...maybe someday someone will gift me a Wilton. I know it won't be my wife.

I bought a Versa Vise about 40 years ago and have never needed another gun vise. Homemade soft jaws made of heavy leather epoxied to plywood.

I think Wilton was bought by Jet long ago. At least the horzontal bandsaws are now labeled Jet. The are identical to mine that carries the Wilton name.

Hit the yard sales and keep your fingers crossed. The Wilton Bullet vises are great, I have 2 of them.

Vices are great tools used for many purposes. The Wilton Bullet is a great gunsmith vise. I have a few of them but my favorite for checkering is an old Chicom vise that both rotates and pivots. Many great vices were destroyed by beating on them with a sledge of some sort. For that you'd be better off with one of the more robust vises.

Wilton ( round tube tradesman vices only), Colombia, Parker, Reed, Yost, starret, Athol, old Rigid, all good vises and can be found used for 2-300 bucks.

I consider a bench vice an essential tool so no matter which one you select, it remains the tool I use the most. Mine is a 50+ year old Craftsman but if I was in the market for a replacement, it would definitely be similar to the one the OP posted, with the versatility of change positions.

With regards to the shooting sports, I found no better piece of equipment than a bench vice for holding the firearm for cleaning or other work, such as mounting a scope - far superior to any gun cradle I ever saw. Of course, you have to employ protect pads to hold the barrel but that's no big deal.

I remember Reed here in Erie along with Rock Island having contracts with
Sears / Roebuck to make their catalog shop vises. The one my uncle took
home when he worked there was a huge pipe vise with anvil top. Brother
now has it, and will pass it on to my nephew. I think it's from the 40's......
