What's your Fave 44 Magnum handgun powder?

hoz53,

I only shoot jacketed bullets, since I shoot the same load in rifle and pistol. VV N-110 works best for me, since it's faster than the other 110 powders. Cleaner, as well. Works best in rifle with 300gr. bullets, pistol with the 240gr. weights.

HTH,

N-110. Ok Thanks I'll check it out.

in order of velocity: lil gun, h110/296, 2400, ... unique,HP38/231, bullseye.
For lead bullets you can reduce the loads with lil gun more than you can with H110/296 and 2400 can be loaded to even lower velocities.
for soft plinking loads you can use unique or HP38/231 which will burn a bit cleaner than unique at lower pressures although with lubed lead you may not notice the difference.
Ok a lot of choices here I've got some 231 and bullseye Thanks

No love for Blue Dot?

I use a little over 14 gr. of Blue Dot behind a 240 gr. Keith (linotype, so it's a little lighter than 240). Does a fine job if you don't mind a little soot.
Blue dot okay thanks

Don't recommend 231 powder in 44 magnum, too easily goes over-pressures even with reduced loads. Some lessons are learned the hard way.
Friends don't let friends load 231 in a 44 Magnum.

Unique for reduced/low velocity loads. 2400 and H110 for full power loads.

This.

I use Unique for pretty much all pistol rounds from 9mm to 44Mag because it's relatively bulky but good for moderate loads. So I can get decent performance but not have the ability to double-charge a case without overflowing (safety).

For full power loads I've used both 2400 and H110. Since my 44Mag is a SW329PD I have a thin blast shield to worry about, and H110 is hard on these so I use 2400. I have a Ruger Deerhunter in 44Mag as well, I started with H110 with that to make it cycle reliably, it will do so with 2400 as well but I'm using it to burn up my H110.

One thing about using flake shotgun powders in a pistol is the way that they "bridge" in a powder measure. These powders include Blue Dot, 800X, 700X, to a lesser degree, Unique. Blue Dot is just about impossible to throw in most powder measures with any degree of accuracy, one will short, the next a heavy charge....BEWARE!!!

For this very reason, I went to a ball powder to get very, very accurate powder charges thrown. 2400 has to be the dirtiest burning powder you could ever shoot in a pistol.

Yep, I have had trouble getting a lot of pistol powders to meter right. I don't like being off charge, especially with a cartridge that makes some pressure. In fact, I blew up the same Browning Hi-Power twice...was lucky the first time, no injury. Second time I got a nasty cut and a piece of brass in the side of my hand.
I have a 629 with an 8 3/8" barrel and the 2400 burns a lot cleaner if you give it some barrel to burn out in.
I've never really had any desire to shoot reduced loads in my 44 mag. I kinda like the feel of a "handfull" of handgun. I like to practice with a gun doing and feeling the same thing as the way I will be using it.

Hoz53. I have never hit a coyote with 44 magnum or any handgun before. I'm sure the 240 gr Sierra JHC would do a number though. The only opportunity was about 90-100 yards while deer hunting one morning and I hit low.....but he run like a scalded dog though! lol.

Nobody has tried Power Pro(TM) 300MP?
It is slower burning than Win296/H110, so it offers more velocity potential, if that is interesting to you. It is also not flash suppressed, so be prepared for some flash.
I love this product in 410bore shotshell but prefer 2400(R) in 357Mag (I don't load 44RemMag).
Please find load info here: http://alliantpowder.com/products/powder/power_pro_300.aspx (Please remember, Alliant loads are recommended maximum charges, so drop 10% and work up.)
Shoot well,
Paul

I have hit a few. Instant anchor.. Blasted a ton of jack rabbits with a 44.. They hide behind a sage brush just shoot through. It's a hammer. I use either 200 gr HPS's or 180's. Whatever I can find. I like the 200 but have a hard time finding them.

I like to use Titegroup with 41M, 44M &45 Colt. It works good in large capacity cases in light/ moderate loads. It also meters great being a flattened ball powder.
