What's Your Best .22cal. You Shoot in Your Pistol/Rifle

Hi Guys :)

I'm new to .22 caliber shooting and have not yet run any .22 ammo thru my new Ruger TakeDown Rifle YET.
I also have a wonderful Smith & Wesson Model 41 and shot serval rounds of .22 ammo thru it and not have tested watch works best thru it.

Can you guys tell me what brand of .22 caliber you shoot thru your 22 firearm?

Thanks Guys
GOD BLESS YOU ALL

Mine is an Anschutz 2013 and it likes very much the RWS R50.
Long ago best groups were with ELEY Tenex, but quality of these have dropped a little since then, and Price has been raised too much.

From what I've seen 22 rifles can be fickle, two rifles of the same model may not like the same ammo. You have to test to find what they like.

I take it's a 10/22? My advice would be to check out some of the Ruger forums and see what most folks are shooting then buy a box of each and go to the range.

My Savage will shoot very good groups at 50 yards with CCI SV. I tried the $25 a box Eley and it's only marginally better, definitely not worth the cost difference to me. It also shoots Federal American Eagle 38gr hollow points well, that one surprised me because most people claim it doesn't shoot well in their rifles.

justinp61...same here... my savage mark 2 BV shoots American Eagle 38gr hollow points the best out of a lot of other brands I've tried. I don't really compete with it but when I did go to are local 22 rim fire silhouette shoot I won a few now and then. :)

My Anschutz sbr 64 likes Lapua center x or eley match, (black box). But i have sorted win subsonic and they shot an amazing well in my anschutz 64 and my CZ 452. Between the two guns there was only a slight accuracy difference.

I have a CZ 452 Silhouette. It shoots practically anything I feed it. WRT accuracy, it shot it's best group with Federal Champion standard velocity (alas, I've been unable to duplicate its one-time performance).

When we talk consistency, it likes Norma USA TAC-22 best. But that seems to be merely 0.2 inches difference at 50 yards vs SK Rifle Match and SK Pistol Match.

But the hard, cold truth is this: what works for me won't necessarily work for you. So you need to experiment.

Contra a pessimistic take on my suggestion, experimentation is where the fun is.

Dude! Embrace experimentation! Get hooked! ;D

A fair number of brands in the $7 a box range will shoot 3/8 inch 5 shot groups at 50 yards. Few $10+ a box brands and lots will shoot 3/4 inch groups at 100. I test a fair amount of ammo and Lapua Center X performs generally well for the price; just depends on the lot. Avoid the supersonic ammo, it is not manufactured for accuracy and performance will suffer when it slows down through the sound barrier. RWS has a different wax; some of my target rifles hate it but others shoot it well. If you don't have a tuner on your rifle you will need to find an ammo brand/lot that is manufactured accurately and one that shoots well in your rifle.

. . . Avoid the supersonic ammo, . . .

I completely, whole-heartedly agree.

The transition from supersonic to subsonic almost certainly will (but may not necessarily) destabilize the bullet. (I've seen a video of pellet gun gurus discussing this issue: 2 of the 3 discussants said the supersonic-to-subsonic transition did affect accuracy, but one showed compelling evidence that (for HIS gun) that transition didn't matter.)

I buy completely into the "transition logic" and I stick with subsonic ammo. Period. But that's from my own testing with my own rifle.

I'd recommend experimenting with subsonic ammo and, once I found the most accurate load, I'd look for the same lot number and buy all of that ammo I could get (well, maybe not all . . .), recognizing that there's a very remote chance that some other (supersonic?) ammo might . . . MIGHT . . . prove more accurate in my rifle.

Short answer: for raw accuracy, I believe your best bet is on subsonic ammo.

Forget about what shoots great in mine/anyone’s rifle ! .22's are notorious for shooting accurately on each rifle with what the rifle likes, NOT what you might like!

First thing is to decide what "speed" ammo you want, then buy 1 box (50 rounds of the better name brands such as Eley, Lapua, RWS, CCI, whatever and try it from a GOOD bench rest (I like 50 yd ).

Be sure to keep your targets, writing the full data on each such as date, manufacturer, wt, lot #etc,.
Clean barrel between each manufacturers bullets (50) so one doesn't influence the next set of 50 rounds, just take your time and try to be as accurate as you can. Do all this on a very calm day (no Wind).
You will be surprised what these targets will show you.

Good luck.

Rem 541THB...Rem subsonic HP and super X
Rem 513T...old T22 and Super X
ruger Mk2 pistol...Rem standard velocity target or for serious performance, CCI that has the pre-stressed frangible 3 part bullet...can't remember the name but it SMOKES coons, chucks, fox etc. I used it on the job as a "car/deer, shoot the wounded deer" gun. DRT right there every time.

I too have a 452 silhouette that loves yellow box Eley ( with the front barrel screw tighten to 30in-lb ) prints 5 shots groups at 50 yards of. 114 and it also loves RWS R100 but a cheaper ammo that shots good out of mine is centurion.
