What's wrong with Varminthunter #88 2000 yard club photos?

Having been on numerous PD hunts to Wyoming in the quest to make the 1 mile club, which I finally did, I know somewhat of what it takes. Can anyone tell me what is wrong with the two 2000 yard club photos in the Fall 2013 Varminthunter?

The pd was on the edge of the field and was blown into the tall grass. Yeah, right! !! Good eyes and congrats on the mile club.

It was pretty obvious, eh? In that grass you couldn't see them 50 yards away even if they were standing straight up on top of a mound, much less 2000 yards!

In the PD town where I got my 1 mile dog last week, they had the grass eaten down to about 4 inches in most places and we could only see them when they were standing up or on a mound. When a sonic boom hit them from a shot, several would run out of the grass up onto mounds. We could not see them until then. Had the grass been as tall as it is in those photos, I would never have fired a shot the whole trip!

Must have loaned that one out. Shucks.

Seeing and hitting a prairie dog that far would take clear, contrasting ground and background. Maybe it was hauled to another point for the picture?

Congratulations on your shot.

I thought about that - maybe they took them over into the grass to get a nice, contrasting photo background. But look at all the work it took to flatten out the grass all around for the photos. I suppose it's possible, but it sure throws doubt on the credibility.

Something else is the claim they were done with 6mm bullets. There is no 6mm I know of that stays supersonic to 2000 yards. My own experience is that the heaviest 6mm bullets are out of steam long before 1500 yards. Past 1000 yards you can go out and pick them up off the mounds undamaged. That's why I had to go to 7mm to go farther out. Ernie Bishop (Long Range Hunting author) told me most people go to 30 or even 338 cal for those 2000 yard attempts.

^^^ Seeing those pics and the fact you cant see 100 yards into the grass behind them Im not a believer at all.
I would have to be there or see actual pictures from the shooting spot to the spot hit and then maybe Id believe it, but I have a lot of doubts as shown above.

I see now. I agree with you guys, it would be hard for me to spot these critters from 2,000 yards away, especially with a 22X and 25X scopes!

I also agree about the 6XC cartridge, too light for 2,000 yards.

Maybe they were just shooting indiscriminately into the grass for a few hundred rounds. Then they went down range to see if they happened to hit anything? ::)

LOL

That's a good one. How would they even know where to look from 2000 yards? They would have to flatten the entire field, and you can see they didn't do that.

Anyone who has ever shot long distance prairie dogs knows that it looks entirely different when you get to the mound area than it does through the scope. Mounds that look very close to each other through the scope can be a hundred yards apart!

Probably pretty tough with just a 105-115grn bullet,6XC case and scope bases that
don't have enough +moa.Seems tough enough of a shot for one guy but its funny that both
father and son did it.Not saying its impossible, but far fetched for sure.

The grass is matted (it's been flattened)only where the dogs and shooters are, the grass around them is standing (highly unlikely),But hey they get the Patch right.....and that looks great on the shooting shirt.

I would sooner put up a hundred dollar bill saying they did it , than to stand in the cross airs and say it isnt possible ......... Keep in mind , with a hot load , and the right pro jo , that boolet will stay supersonic to 18k + ........ Never under estimate what a man can do with a lot of time and beer on his hands ........

Highly unlikely

Indeed. With a 6XC no less.

I normally don't do a rain dance on someone's accomplishment parade but the improbable ballistics and "grassy knoll" photos aren't adding up for me.

Just curious: how far does a target VLD style bullet fling a prairie dog after traveling 2000 yards? Apparently far enough to get the critter into the lush grass.

Edit: Is it just me, or does the matted grass appear to be laying down in the same pattern in both photos?
