whats the difference?

Hey Guys and Gals,
what is the big difference between the rem 40x and 540x?? When it comes to the .22lr in shooting prone/3p. Is it just hype, reputation, and money or something more? Thanks for the education.
cheers,
doc

The 40x is made off of a rem 700 action, converted to rimfire, screwed in barrel, great trigger options, the other is just a rimfire action.

Actually I think both are lacking in a proper adjustable stock for shooting prone or especially 3P at 50 feet indoor or 50 yards/meters outdoor. There are so many better options out there now that these types of rifles have gone by the way side in any real competative sense.
Will they shoot well enough? I believe they will shoot plenty good enough for both aplications but at the cost of good stock to put them in... If you restock it to something suitable you might as wel get an Anshutz all set up already.
I say this actually owning a 40X and using it currently for Prone Outdoor at 50 Yards to 100 yards and even a couple of 200 yard Prone matches. Though with a Tube gun stock to mimic my Palma rifle with the same sights and trigger. Its a good shooter. and will clean the 100yard Smallbore target if Im on my game ofcourse.

Russ have given you some great advice. I would seriously look at the Anschutz 64 MPR. I bought one with Anschutz sights, and accessories from Champion Shooters Supply in Ohio. With Wolf Match Extra ammo, I can tear up the 10 ring at 50 meters. The MPR is a 5 shot repeater if that is important to you.

Go to Champion Shooters website, and you can see the entire Anschutz line of rifles.

I had a 540X, and it shot just fine, but as Russ said, the factory stock left a lot to be desired.

As always thank you all for the advice...i sent Gary Elesio and email to see if a 540x will fit in one of his tubes, or if he could make one fit. i use a tube for my .260 and like the feel of the set up. At perry they had some annie bbld actions less bolt, trigger, bolt release etc. between $250-$350. i almost did the deed but was not sure about the availability and cost of the parts. i actually have the sights already...kinda backwards this time. ;D i am not trying to make podium at a world cup event...just practice prone and off hand. i am beginning to think that maybe the crossman MAR upper is the better way for me to go. i guess the next step is to call mac tilton and see if he has something that is rusting gracefully in the corner that might fit the bill. please keep the advice coming it is greatly appreciated.

Yahooo More guns cant go wrong with that choice...

I had a feeling that your where looking at the CMP 40X's. If Iwas a service rifle shooter looking to leg out I would certainly look at the MAR air rifle or a 22LR upper if you live in the north where training in the winter is uncomfortable.
If your a prone match rifle shooter looking to improve your prone shooting only then maybe consider one of Gary;s stocks to mimic your 260.... weather it be a Annie from Mac or a 40X from CMP or others
Note that the 40X are single shot, If you wanted to practice sitting rapid with a 22lr in a tube gun you would have to go the Annie tube stock route that Gary makes and a repeater Anshutz from Mac.

Whoo boy that is alot to think about there.
Either way the cross training effects of all the options above are of great value to you and I believe you will use what ever option you choose to great effect.
