What’s the deal with 4895 Garand Loads?

Hello,

I have a pound of IMR 4895 and a bunch of midway 2nd’s 168 grain bullets and am trying to load up some rounds for my M1 Garand.

Checking out the hodgdon online reloading manual, I’m seeing a huge difference between imr 4895 and h4895. I’ve heard that these 2 powders should be fairly close, but these look like 2 totally different loads!

Can anyone confirm ‘the load’ for Garand with IMR powder for accuracy loads? I know I have seen recommended loads for Garand matches but don’t have the book anymore.BC7F2A40-83A8-4D9A-A820-54946DC0EA65.png

Many shooters (including me) find a match load somewhere in the range 46.0-47.0gn IMR4895 with a 168gn bullet. Common wisdom is that H4895 is a tad faster so should be reduced from those numbers but I don't have personal experience and can't speak to the amount.

In my M1A, H-4895 certainly burns a little bit faster.

With IMR-4895 I had to add almost 2 gr to make the same velocity as H-4895. (with 168 smk)

Those facts alone say a bigger case than 308win might have even a bigger gap between maximum loads.

I've never used H4895 in my M-1 but with IMR4895 my load with S168SMK was 48.0 grains. Function was good and recoil modest. Accuracy was good for an as issued M-1.
