What's the barrel life of a 7mm SAUM

What's the barrel life of a 7mm SAUM shooting 180 bergers with 60-62 grs of H-4831sc. Since it's using approx. 6-8 grs. more powder than a 284 I'm thinking it will be between a 284 and a 7mm WSM. Is 1500 rds about right?

My 7saumAI is up to about 1150 rounds now with the 168 Bergers and all still seems well. I don't run it hot or hard so I imagine it's good for that many more before it will need set back..

Preacher,

Can you post a blueprint of the 7mm rem saum AI reamer for me to see. Sounds very interesting. Thanks.

No blue print, it's been blown out at the shoulder .006 and with a 35 degrees shoulder, with a 316 neck and a 188 free-bore......

Doesn't the 7mm WSM have a 35 degree shoulder and a larger case capacity? What would be the main differences between the Rsaum-AI and the WSM? Im having a gun built soon and am on the fence between the 2 choices, but havent concidered the Rsaum-AI......
thanks

The RSAUM case let's me seat 180 bergers to a COL of 3.035 .010 off the lands for targets then switch over to 120 vmax .010 off the lands for varmint control. I don't think the short neck of the wsm would allow you to do this.

Bones, what loads have you found to be most consistant with the 180 Bergers in your rifle? Also, what speeds are you getting? barrel length? Twist?

Thanks

Remington cases WLRM primers,My gun likes H4831sc,RL 25, Win S780 all three powders consistantly group .75" five shots at 200yds. I have no idea how fast yet, 28" gaillard barrel, 1in9 twist. Can't wait to stretch her legs a bit this spring when it warms up a bit.

I'm running 62.5gns of H1000 and getting 2950fps. Running 180gn Bergers.

I recrowned for the first time at 1800 rounds as I felt the center count had dropped to around the 60.5 mark, and the other day when hitting 1900 rounds I shot 60.9 with the following 7 shots still in the Super V at 800 yards.

While 800 yards is considerably easier due to target size, it still proved that the 7mm SAUM when running moderate loads, still maintained the competitive accuracy that it had 1800 rounds earlier.

Go the Krieger barrels, always happy with them!!!

My last one I switched between 168's and 180 bergers and got 1100 rounds though it before I took it off. Honestly it shoot well still but looked like it was ready to give up the ghost.
Current one shooting 168's I have 350 rounds and all looks great probably gonna get 1200-1400 rounds on her.

Just clarifying, Bartmans 60.9 is the same as a 100.9 in USA, and I have seen him shoot, he is no keyboard marksman.

I have to say though that you are doing well to have it going so well at 1800 rounds. My 284 Shehanes are starting to lose their edge by 2000 rounds and my 7mm/300WSMs have all needed a rechamber before 1200 rounds on the ones I ran around 2950 fps (usually between 61-62gns of H4831sc). The ones I cranked up to 3080 fps went south long before this.

Have any of you with the long barrels ever tried Reloder 33? I just tried it in my 7 Rem mag with 160 and 175-grain bullets and it was really surprising. Great accuracy and an increase in velocity over many others.

I am using CCI BR2s with H1000 and 180 VLDs. No issues even at -20°F.

Don't know how you would get enough RE33 in the case, I use a hat full of H1000.

I think you have highlighted the difference Rod.....you are using a hotter powder. We are both using similar amounts of powder, but I'm using the slower 2217 (H1000) powder. DOH, now I've given out my secret ;)

If you turn up to QRA Queens this year, you may get to see it perform.

for those of you shooting H1000 with 180 vlds, are you using magnum primers?

I use standard Federal 210M, which is NOT a magnum primer.

Hi Rod/Bart
I recently won the NSW Match Rifle Champs with 1750 on my 7 saum barrel, and I run it HOT as you know.

Gadget, you run N165 which is one of the coolest burning powders around, even cooler burning than H1000 (and noticeably cooler than H4831sc). With a powder this cool, you can run it hot :-\ without eroding the throat as much.
I think N165 might be hard to find in U.S though.

I'm using CCI magnum primer without issues, only 400 rounds so far it's just startin to hammer now.

Gadget, What is your load of VN165. I have been running it in my Shehane, works great. Just started working with 7RSAUM. Have had some good groups while looking for a load with H1000.
Thanks
