whats a spider?

Hello all, I bought myself a lathe not even knowing how to turn one on, but I'm persistent on learning how to build my own rifle. I'm interested in this thing called the "Spider".
Darrel Holland may use one in the AGI video, I don't know for sure but he uses something. Any help would be appreciated, like I said I'm a newb. Thanks, SPM

A spider is a fitting that supports the end of the barrel you are not cutting. It has 4 bolts that can be used to adjust the end of the barrel in whatever direction you need it to go. http://www.gretanrifles.com/content/img7.jpg is a pic kinda like a spider, this is a jig that holds an action from the Gre Tan web site. The spider goes in the other end of the lathe.

Fraid you'll have to make one. Or have someone make it for you. They're not "off the shelf" items.

Buy one??? That's not why you bought a lathe. While you're at it make one for the other end of the barrel also. Looks pretty much the same except you have a longer straight sacraficial section that you turn true each time you use it. It rides on the steady rest. Make one for your actions too. Used for truing them. And your bolts. You might even find some time to work on guns.

The one in the picture is a "Kent" 14x40 tool room lathe.

It has helped me build many a nice rifle.
