What’s a good “red dot” sight for $200-400 ?

I just bought a Windham 7.62-39 and I’m looking for a cheaper red dot sight for it. Defense gun parameters.
Thanks in advance!

They are just out of the price range you laid out but the aimpoint pro And trijicon rmr are ones I have experience with and would recommend. Maybe there is a labor day sale some where.

I like the Cmore series. They have swapable MOA size dots so you can tune the site for the current task, not one size dot fits all. I also like the locking screws on the adjustments, and the battery life. I've had one on my AR15-22 for years and haven't had to change batteries or adjust the zero.

Think about the window size. It's easy to put something like the Holosun 507 on something like yo ur AR. But, you will have to have a tall (well and inch or thereabouts) riser to get it to a height that aligns with your eye. Something like the 507 or Trijicon RMR placed on a picatiny mount that is too low means you will not be able to get your head low enough to see through the sight or if you can see through it and the riser is too low, the dot will be in the top of the window.

The Holosun 510C is designed for carbine use and has a nice big window.

Also, think about the dot size that will work for you and what your intended use will be. Do you want to get on a man sized target from close to out to say 200 yds? Then a larger dot may work and be easier to see and shoot fast with, especially up close. If you want a little more accuracy and not so much up close, a smaller 2 or 3 moa dot may work. Holosun also has some models with switchable reticules - 2 moa dot, 65 moa circle, or 2 moa dot inside the circle.

I'm just passing on what I have experienced recently. I just bought a Holosun 407 C with the intention of trying it on an AR pistol then moving it permanently to a .22 lr rifle. So, I wanted small and a conventional stock means no high riser needed. I was stupid (I mean really stupid) because they had the Holosun 510C in red on sale for $199! I wish I had bought one for AR use, as they are $309 now.

I'm certainly no expert, but like you, a new guy in trying one out, so I am just trying to pass along what I have experienced so far.

A Holosun is Probably what your after. I have two and for the price they are great. I actually took my rmr off and put a holosun on my match pistol and shot our local steel pistol match. For the money holosun is hard to beat.

Seems like the Holosun is the popular optic here. Do you already have iron sights on the rifle? If so, you need a base that offers an industry standard height for co-witnessing the optic to the irons (if you plan on a BUIS). If not, then the mount can be what you wish. The majority of co-witness bases are good for practically anyone's geometry on the stock. Hope this helps.

SIG Romeo 7 @ $200 online works well. Uses AAA battery for up to 40,000 hours and has a 30mm tube, 2 MOA dot

Checkout the Sightron 33mm. I have a couple on my Bows. I love them. Not sure on price but they would be in the 300-350 range I'd think.

A slightly different approach would be a Vortex Spitfire on the top rail, and a cheap laser mounted on the forearm to be operated by a left hand finger or thumb.

Before you buy, be sure to try. I have an off axis astigmatism, and found that red dots just didn’t work well for me even with corrective lenses. A 1x conventional LER sight with reticle proved much better. For the rare night shoots we did, I would turn on reticle illumination. This was back when I was doing action shooting games.

With my eye issues what I saw was more like a small fuzzy starburst than a clear dot.
