What would the diffrences be???

Phil

Gold $$ Contributor
6 Dasher 55gr. Nosler BC.276 velocity 4000fps.

22 Dasher 53gr. V-max BC.290 velocity 4000fps.

Which would be the better build????? :o

What are the advantages/disadvantages of either????

I`m thinking they are almost ballistically identical.......Am i missing something???

Phil.

I don't have personal experience, but I would hazard the guess that the 6mm would have a longer barrel life. The 22 is more overbore.

Hopefully, someone with direct experience can help out.

Good Luck!

Phil,

They're not ballistically identical by any means: they're similar at the muzzle, but the 22 is going to have higher SD and BC so long as you stick to comparing bullets of the same weight. Once you start comparing 22 and 6mm bullets with similar SDs, you'll get a more fair comparison. With the 53-55 grain bullets, the 22 will outrange the 6mm in most examples, if both are started at the same velocity. Stepping up to the heavier 70-75 grain bullets in the 6mm will turn the advantage to the larger bore.

Kevin,

If i understand you correctly.....the 22 Dasher will out perform the 6mm version in this instance.........

Is that correct?????????? :-\

Phil -

Howdy !

What is your intended application(s) ?

22 Dasher is NOT overbore, for .224" cal.
With a 53gr .224" cal bullet, and a notional 26" barrel; you'd have to go to a case of about
.22-250 capacity... before arriving @ an over-bore condition. I don't believe Dasher case cap is that high.

The high velocities you mention, sound like you have vaminting in mind ?
If so, bullet ability to tolerate " wind " will be one conisderation, in your cal/bullet choices.

Phil,

With the parameters you set out here, yes, it would outrange the 6mm and have better retained velocity, energy, reduced wind drift and all that good stuff. Again, if you're comparing a 22 and a 6mm bullet with the same or even closely similar Sectional Density, the 6mm will have the edge. No such thing as a perfect round, they're all a series of trade-offs we need to consdier for a given application.

The 6mm in this instance would probably give better barrel life, but it wouldn't amount to too much of a difference.

Probably have to use slower powders in the 22 Dasher and barrel life would not be quite as long, but other then that ballistics would be very similar with a slight edge going to the 22.

My 6 Dashers I'm running the 55 BT's at 3900 in 26" tubes, for a decent load in hot temps.

I'll pretty much guarantee you're not gonna see anywhere close to 4000 in a 22 Dasher with the 53's. 40's will do 4200, 50's around 3900, and 55's in the 3700's.

I thought I could get 22-250 performance and longer barrel life with the 22 Dasher, so I promptly I wore the first one out in under 1900 rounds. It's now a 6 Dasher. I've got another one that's toast now too, useful for only fireforming duties now.

My dog guns are now all 6 Dashers and 70's at 3650.

Alf,

I know you have more experience with these 2 calibers than i do.

What would be your guess as to velocity with the 22 dasher and the 53gr bullets????

Phil.

ALF, I think it's possible to get 4Kfps, but at an even greater cost..

This is what I figure(with software):
A 22Dasher/53gr V-max(jammed) could reach 4Kfps if packed with 39.7gr IMR4350. This is a damn stiff load even with slow powder & I figure accurate barrel life for it @ ~1200 shots(at best). Similar to a 6.5x284.
A 6Dasher/55gr Nosler(jammed) should reach 4Kfps with 38.5gr Ramshot Tac. Again a very stiff load and I figure accurate barrel life for it @ ~1700 shots(maybe).
By comparison, I figure my 6br/95VLD @ 2975fps will reach ~2800 shots

I see no reason to generalize barrel life between these as insignificant.

Phil,

Just a guess, as I haven't seen that bullet yet.

I'm thinking with the better BC of the new 53, it maybe has a longer bearing surface, which will add some pressure, vs comparing to a "regular" 50 or 55 grain bullet.

So I'm only guessing that it'll fall closer to say a 55BT's velocity top end, than splitting the even difference between the 50 and 55's velocity, with all things equal, of course......

I wouldn't/won't do another 22 Dasher for a PD gun, just because of the shorter life. If a guy just has to have a 22, I'd go no bigger than a 22 BR, preferably a 22-204, 223 Ackley, or a plain 223, in that order.

Crusing through my notes, attainable velocity vs accurate velocity is sometimes worlds apart.
