What would be your preference on brass (brand) for .308 reloading

I have Hornady "match" new brass I bought, because it was the available. What brand is the most consistant in case size dimensions? I read about some Win brass having .004" thicker neck. That seems like a lot. How would you rate new-or once fired brass in these below. I am going to try to make as precision loads as possible. This is for Rem 700 .308 20" bbl, 1-12"twist. Shooting 100-500yds. (if that matters)

lapua
Remington
Hornady
Winchester
Lake City
Federal
Other I missed?
Thanks for your input.

I have had very good luck with IMI match brass, a friend and I bought 500 and split them many years ago. Still going strong.

The "winning / record holding" F-T/R shooters at Bayou Rifles are ALL using Lapua "PALMA" brass.. It is nearly indestructible (within reason of course) and ( I hate to say this but it is true) you can run pressures HIGHER than L/R primed brass. The e.s.'s are low and accuracy is off the scale...

I recently sold off all my .308 Hornady Match, FGMM brass and switched to Lapua. Most consistent brass of them all. FGMM was good stuff but soft. Hornady brass weight was all over the place.

Winchester, Lake City LR, and then lapua.
I chose lapua last because the two before it when prepped properly and just as good as lapua.
I sold/gave away all my lapua an stuck with winchester brass.
I think I have some lapua in 223 left, but haven't touched it yet.
Winchester brass more case capacity for them heavy bullets (208 amax)

Last year, I conducted a summer long test of all the listed brass plus Norma and Nosler in terms of accuracy and consistency. The test was run comparing 15 of the best casing of each brand that were the closest in comparison including thickness, weight and measurements when annealed and resized to Sammi specs. In my test, Lapua came out to be the overall best, followed by Norma & Nosler very close and actually Federal and Lake City National Match followed those two (very durable casings). If I were competing, no doubt it would be Lapua! If I were only loading for hunting , any on the list would work very well.

CatShooter posted the Rockwell hardness of .223/5.56 cases and Lake city was the hardest followed by Lapua. The softest cases were Federal and Remington, meaning with warmer loads the harder cases last longer before the primer pocket stretches out of shape. And I would have to say Lake City cases are built heavy duty and are thicker and harder in the base web area plus being made to higher quality standards than off the shelf .308 cases with the exception of Lapua.

Below shows the composition of the various brands of brass and you can see why Federal and Remington are the softest brands of brass.

243 Win For Tactical Comps
"We asked GA Precision’s George Gardner why he chose .243 Winchester for his Tactical Comp Gun. He replied, “Why would I run anything else? Think about it. I’m sending a .585 BC 115 at 3150 fps–that’ll shoot inside the 6XC and .260 Rem with ease. I’m pretty sure I have found the Holy Grail of Comp Rifles. There are no brass issues like you can get forming .260 brass. I don’t have to worry about doughnuts, reaming necks–none of that. And the choice in brass is great too–run Lapua if you want max reloads and great accuracy. Run Winchester if you’re on a budget, and so you won’t cry if you lose some cases in a match."

Everyone has opinions, however if you want facts check out Catshooter's $2,500 Ames Hardness Gauge and what he did with it.

If you want the easy way do what Ben says above. He knows what he's talking about. That's what most people should do. The only problem is that the 308 Lapua Palma brass is scarce.

However, if you have time on your hands and like a challenge, than go the Lake City (LC) route. I believe that both the Lapua and the LC (308) are basically machine gun brass, that's why they have a thicker head/webbing than other brass. I've fired a M60 machine gun ('72 Basic Training) and those barrels get red hot. I figured that any brass engineered to go in those chambers has got to be the best there is.

You can buy virgin Lapua, you cannot buy virgin LC because Uncle Sam is the sole customer. As usual with Uncle Sam, he buys the best (it's only taxpayer's money after all) and after they shoot it once, then they virtually give it away.

I been playing with the Lake City for a few months and I can say for sure that it doesn't shoot better than Lapua, but it doesn't shoot any worse either. What I like about the LC is that it has nice and tight primer pockets, unlike the regular Lapua. Since I switched I gave away 300 cases of regular Lapua (fired 3X) to a friend that I practice with.

Regarding consistency, look at the picture below. I took ten cases of LC and Lapua at random and weighed their water capacity on my Sartorius scale. Guess which has less volume variance. The LC has less case capacity because it is thicker harder brass. I've gone up to 44.5 grains of Varget pushing a 200 grain Berger hybrid, had no impact on the LC, the Lapua's got thrashed because they wouldn't hold a primer after that. Did I mention that the LC brass is hard?

I anneal after every firing and turn necks and if you don't anneal stay away from the LC because it is hard (again), if you have a bad heart, high blood pressure, arthritis, etc... stay away from this stuff because the first time you resize it, you will have to use brute force. As usual, what makes it good is also what makes it hard to work with it. After the first firing in my chamber its been easy street.

I didn't switch to LC because they are cheap, I switched to them because they are hard and I believe it is the best 308 brass there is and its American. I expect to get 20 or more reloads out of them, but I haven't done it yet, so it is just a theory. I expect them to save me time and work. Saving a few hundreds of dollars is just icing on the cake.

Kindest regards,

Joe

P.S. I'm a new guy shooting F/TR at Bayou Rifle.

I binned 2nd fired Lapua cases with loose pockets. They had more cases head expansion than 9th fired Winchester cases. Same rifle LR target shooting

Lapua for sure, Norma follows that. If you like putting in the extra work, Lake City is good to and can hold the higher pressures.

If I competed, it would be Lapua. 1shot Lake city, at $225/1000 works for me. I pick out 1-200 good ones for "accurate" shooting and use the rest for practice and fun/training/friends shooting .and, I still have new LC ammo I bought for $10/box back when you could. My friends seem to shoot a lot of my reloads!?!

I chose the original small primer pocket .075" flash hole

Remington URBR brass

Lapua & other brands are sucking hind tit!
