I am buying a new barrel for one of my rifles and i will need to be able to switch them out. I have never taken a barrel off, and dont know what I like or dont like. This rifle is not a switch barrel. I plan on having switch barreled rifles in the future, so only want to buy once.

Can you share with me what type of action wrench and vise you use and why (ease, cost, strength....etc)

Right now it will be for Bat action and HV barrels. In future I see a Remmy action abd straight taper barrels being changed.

I also have the Viper for my barrel vise. For the action wrench I use a Kelbly with the T-handle.

I got the barrel vise from stuff I have read here. And the action wrench I got because my gunsmith said he thought they were the best. But they are the only ones I have experience with but like both of them.

I have a barrel vise and a rear-entry action wrench from pbike here on the forum. They work well for me. I also have a action wrench from Jim Briggs at Northland Shooters Supply. It also works well. For switch barrel work, I like the rear-entry wrench better than the external clamp wrench from NSS.

I was thinking of rear entry wrench too. Do I want one with T handle? Or that takes a ratchet oe torque wrench? Can I assume that I need a different wrench for each different action make and/or model?

My rear entry wrench fits Remington 700's. I suspect it would work for almost any two lugged receiver. My external wrench fits Remington 700 and Savage receivers. It should work for anything that has a round body and the diameter of a Remington 700. I only have Remington 700 action rifles so I'm not sure what all my wrenches will fit.

i like the rear entry T-handle. Remember the L-shaped lug wrench vs. a cross lug wrench? Got mine with a vise from pbike here on the forum. Vise is neat. A C clamp and it is mobile or drill and mount it.

most rear entry wrenches will except for surgeon they had to be different but you can buy their wrench it just happens to be double what yhe others cost. I have viper vise and it works great and never makes a mark

I bought Pbike's wrench and barrel vise, mine is a Remington/savage rear entry and the handle is off set to allow the barrel to be removed with the stock on. His name is paul becigul.Look up pbike on here,he may have a number after his name and I am sure someone will put it up.His prices are more than reasonable and they are bulletproof. It is pbike257 and his email is pbike257@Gmail.com You wont be sorry, his wrench is really nice.

Another +1 for Paul's wrench and vise. Nice craftsmanship and they work very well. Good guy to deal with. He has a youtube video that shows him demonstrating one. It's quick and very helpful.

There is one difference between the PMA and the pbike257. PMA is stainless steel while the pbike257 is hardened steel with an oxide finish. I have seen the pbike with the tee handle, a male six sided hex, and a female half inch socket end.
I guess that's more than one difference but the big difference is the stainless versus hard steel.

Wes,

Get an action wrench from B.A.T., and a vice from Kelbly's [like the one in the video below].

Watch this for removal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_Ou4VPLjJ4

This for installation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYQ-bNDgf2M

I use a socket and extension I picked up at AutoZone along with a torque wrench [optional]. 50 lbs is plenty when tightening. Billy Stevens says a good-Grunt hand twist is OK too.

I clean both treads real well, then use Jet-Lube SS-30 Copper Anti-Seize Lube recommended by B.A.T. It should be a piece of cake for you.

Tony covers removal/installation in his book but the videos are excellent.
