What two way radios do you like for range use?

What brand and model two way radios do you like for match use to communicate between the firing line and the pits? My biggest concern is sufficient volume to hear the range commands clearly in the pits.

Cheap FRS radios are preferred because of compatibility. Anyone can, if they wish, buy a pair and be assured they'll work with the existing range radios. You can get them anywhere and if you shop yard sales, they're practically free. Even full retail they're inexpensive. The ones I've used seem plenty loud and have sufficient battery life to last for the entire match. What's not to like?

+1 for cell phones. Unlimited everything. Why spend more on hand held radios ( my opinion). U can send pics of the target to the shooter too. Just last weekend did just that. Drove the quad to the targets and sent pics back to the bench. Technology is something else. I was the last guy at work to get a smart phone and now I wouldn't want to be without it.

Many ranges are too far out in the woods for any or at least good cell phone coverage. Cherry Ridge in New Jersey and Williamsport are prime examples. Radio Shack has handheld radios that work in the Personal Radio Band and there are even older CB handhelds available.

For reliability, longevity etc. I use commercial hand held radios, Yaesu, Motorola, Kennwod or ICOM. For the best noise / volume, I prefer an ear bud with an over the ear light weight mike. Push To Talk on my belt.

As a pilot and Ham Radio operator I use a bench of different ones and there is no license necessary for the aviation handhelds and they can be used on frequencies that will not bother anyone.

We also use the old police and fire Motorola model HT600. They have a range of well over a mile. How do I know? Detroit House Of Corrections is better than a mile away from WWCCA and one morning while setting flags they asked us to change channels as we were interfering with their communications inside the prison. We have six channels on our radios. You can get them from time to time at community auctions.

From my experiences, it is not the norm that all the various cell phone carriers will work well (if at all) at most rifle ranges.
It would be great if they did. But even then, a radio on standby performs functions a cell phone won't.

Fortunately I'm lucky there. Use to have and use Motorola's but believe there are many others much cheaper and easily as good for that use. Midland makes very good models but not nearly as cheap as the eBay model that was posted earlier.

Being from the thumb in Michigan you certainly have your cell phone challenges unless your using thumb cellular.

Marine radios with chip replacements . Williamsport you don't need to worry about the coast guard . Larry
What "chip" do you replace in the marine VHF radio?

We use a grab bag of GMRS radios.

Also, I'd just like to mention, that with the exception of cell phones, FRS and CB raidos, unless you have a FCC license to use the specific frequencies you're using, in the way they're being used, there could be legal repercussions.
