What twist to stabilize the Berger 95 VLD?

Giving a try to a barrel chambered in the original 6mm "X" or shortened .243 Winchester. It's a barrel that was pulled from a Remington 700 Varmint and shortened accordingly. Twist must be 1 in 9". Will it stabilize short VLD's like the 95 Berger or the Hdy 105 A-max?

Howdy !

Apples and near-apples.....

My 6mm wildcat has case caapacity about 2gr less than a .243 ( dependent on powder and bullets selected ).

My rifle has a Broughton 29" SS 5-groove 1-8, and it shoots 65 -107s with aplomb.

If you're not ever intending to shoot 115s, then I vote for a 1-8".

IMHO.

If it's a true 1-9", you'll likely be OK in everything except the most horrendously cold and high pressure weather conditions. Bryan Litz (Applied Ballistics for Long Range Shooting 2nd ed) gives it a best case Miller Twist Rule based Sg of 1.50 (comfortably in the green zone), a Nominal case (59F, sea level, 50% humidity) Sg of 1.31 which while below the recommended 1.4 is still plenty stable, and it's still above a value of 1 for the worst case scenario of 0F sea level and zero humidity. I'm pretty sure others have said on this forum that this bullet will shoot well in a 1-10" twist barrel in summer conditions, although I've not tried it myself.

My 6x284 10-twist Hart barrel stabilizes the 105 A-Max and the 95 VLD Berger very well. I have several PDs who will testify.

Thank you guys, you're great! I can't wait to start breaking the barrel in and run some serious tests with N-550 and A-max's.
I will have to choose between .22-250 brass that's plentiful and cheap and necked down 6,5 Creedmoor cases. Well... one step at a time...
Thanks again.
