what tollerances for top shooters

The smallest 10 shot group shot at 1k 2.6" was done with ammo that was loaded 7 months prior. Personally all my ammo is loaded the night before the match, at most a few days. I was never a long seater so I dont know if I ever have any welding. I always seated the bullets in one step right to where I wanted them. I do think Jim re-seated those bullets before he shot that 2.6"

He said he did reseat the record 10. The sighters however were seated 7 months prior, and for the record were pinwheeling the spotter disk. However there was a fair amount of movement on point of impact between the two.

Tom
Lots of guys use things to stop welding. Some never tell what they use. Matt

5" steel at 600. 8" at 1018 yds
Sight in and repaint 15 minutes you get to fire your first shot Ever 30 minutes they repaint 3 rounds of 5 shots normally 2 hours from your practice till you finish . No sighters. 600 is not to bad but 1018 has been impossible . 14 out 15 is the record at 1018 . Larry

LArry,

PLease take it elsewere. you have added nothing to this conversation.

This is a great thread BTW.

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned Is checking the fired case for proper clearance. I'd add that to the reloading list.

I will check my fired cases to insure that a bullet can slip down the neck without restriction before loading for a match.

Good Morning Bart,

It's early and I may not be awake yet, I was wondering if you can elaborate on this. What mite I be checking for , a dented neck? or is their something else that I haven't noticed? I have only been loading for a few years and i'm interested in reloading the most accurate ammo that I can.

Enough clearance on your brass. Matt

It's to insure your bullet has a proper release. You are checking to make sure there is enough clearance between your case neck and the chamber. You are also checking for restrictions in you case neck (aka donuts).

If your case necks are turned too tight the bullet won't slide through the case neck. Also if there is a donut in your case neck the bullet will partially go down the neck and stop.

I am not arguing so please dont take it that way.

NOne of my case so far have developed donuts. i have some Hornady cases with 7 and 8 reloads, some norma with 12 in the 6.5 creed and one batch of 6.5x47 lapua with over 20 and none have developed donuts.

WHat does having a bukket that slides freelyin a fired cases neck have to do with with clearence between the neck and chamber walls? is it if it does not slide freely the case is not releasing the bullet freely because of the inability of it to expand? would that not only happen in a tight chamber with necks which were not turned enough?

It's happens when your necks aren't turned down enough in a tight neck chamber. It also can happen over a period of time after brass flows into the case neck. If you don't check it you won't know. This is one of those little details that doesn't get talked about much.

You are looking for a commonality with Top shooters and reloading. The requirements of what's important vary somewhat from discipline to discipline. Not to get in a pissing contest but as far as having loads perfect/reloading I'd say 1000 yard benchrest is as stringent as it gets. What is very important to one discipline isn't as critical in the next. I've shot a little 1000 yard bench, a good deal 600 yard bench, some F Class and a great deal of 100/200 yard group. The thing you'll find among all the Top Shooters a keen attention to detail in every aspect of their sport.

Makes sense.

I Shoot 600 yard f class mostly as thatvis what is closest to me.there is some BR guys about 3.5 hourz northof me in Maine. There is a 1k range about 4 hours away which I beleive is only f class. there is a 1.1k steel range about 3 hours out and a couople big ranges in PA about 6.

BUt as someone learning I am more intrested in doing it right. I agree the 1k BR guys most likely are the most anal but if it works for them why woukd it not benifit me?

Maybe a trip to see a match in Williamsport PA. They are always willing to help and bring the gun along and shoot. Somebody will help you get on, if you ask. Light guns are Saturday mornings every other week.. About the only rule is 17 pounds. Matt
