What to plug the breach with?

I have a Remington 7400 auto in .30-06. I'd like to try the Wipe-Out bore cleaner. They instruct to plug the breach of the gun and then fill the barrel with foam. What should I use to plug the breach of my rifles?

Thanks for any suggestions.

For a bolt gun. I just stick in my cleaning rod bore guide, without the extension). When I see a little foam come out the back, I know the barrel is full of WipeOut.

On a semi where you can't insert a bore guide from the rear in place of the bolt, Apply Wipe Out from the breech end, using plastic tubing to fit your chamber. Jason has written a nice article explaining this method: http://www.6mmbr.com/jbwipeout.html

Tip: I usually wait about 40 minutes, then reapply. I do this before patching out. It increases the concentration in the barrel. The only reason you have to wait is to let the bubbles settle after the first application.

I've never used this product but had a question myself. When using a foaming bore cleaner like this on an a 7400 won't you need to clean out the gas cylinder afterwards? I would think it would be worse at migrating to the gas cylinder than regular cleaning products. Auto shooters here should know.

I use the Chamber Plug, machined part with an O-ring) but frankly a chamber mop or even a wad of paper towel will work.

You might also prefer the new "Patch-Out" liquid form of the same product that you apply with a patch.

Thanks for the great ideas & tips. I think I'll ask around to see if the foam would creep into the gas tube and if I shouldn't use Wipe-Out in that gun. I might try the Patch-Out, although I'm sure it doesn't work like the other. I'll try Wipe-out in my single shots and levers though.

Thanks!

Moderator, Damn your eyes! I've been trying all day to get this bore guide in my Rem 7400. What's your trick?

Doh! Shows I have to pay more attention to the original post. Here's a Rem 7400:

Without a passage through the rear of the action, you can't use a bore guide as I suggested... on this rifle. Use a fat bore mop, make sure it's long enough to be easily removed), or, better yet, use the chamber plug suggested by Fred. Or go in through the breech as shown above.

I actualy posted a link to the chamber plug/Midway early on yesterday but deleted it because I didn't see the text below that I have now highlighted. [cut & pasted from Midway's website]

EJS Chamber Plug 25-06, 270 Winchester and 30-06 Springfield

Insert the plug into your chamber, fill the barrel with your favorite solvent, let soak overnight and wipe out the fouling. Also useful to prevent gun oil from seeping into the action or trigger mechanism when storing your guns. Note: not designed for use with ported barrels, semi-auto or automatic rifles.
