Using foam bore cleaners - how do you plug the chamber?

Normally with a foaming bore cleaner you use a normal tight sealing bore guide, and shoot the foam in from the action end til it comes out the muzzle. Without the open end I think the trapped air would prevent the foam from getting where it needs to go.

The trick is getting the hose on the can to seal in the bore guide, without creating too much back pressure. On a 30 cal, no problem. 6.5 might have to start slow to get it going down the bore. 22 cal... haven't got that to work yet

I use the Delrin bore guides, but counter drill a 3/8" hole at the cleaning rod end, just deep enough so that the hose from the Wipe-Out nozzle seals in it and stays. That keeps all the cleaner where it belongs in the bore/chamber and out of the action. I also hang a Powerade bottle over the muzzle to catch the foam.

Here's my method. I have a full-length O-ring Cleaning rod guide in the action. I apply WipeOut through the muzzle until I just see a small amount of foam in the end of the rod guide. (Towel is over comb of stock to absorb any spillage. With practice you can stop squirting before much foam, if any, comes out the end). Then I wait 15-20 minutes for the WipeOut bubbles to subside. I then apply WipeOut a SECOND time just as before. I wipe off the muzzle, plug the muzzle end with a flared ear plug, held in place with blue masking tape. I usually just shove a patch in the end of the cleaning rod guide, and I may put some electrical tape to hold that in place.

I normally transport my rifles in a top-loading Plano Airglide case which has a slight downward tilt, so I don't have foam coming out the rod guide. After the drive home, there may be a few drops at the muzzle end -- but not a big deal.

Airglide case (mfg. photo, not my rifle). Muzzle is lower than action. This case may not be long enough for rifles with barrels over 28"

Prior to applying WipeOut TWICE. I run 4-6 soaking wet patches through the barrel. All this cleaning is done within 30 minutes of the end of a match or practice session, BEFORE the carbon sets up hard. As a result, I don't have to do much brushing.

What chemical is in a foaming cleaner that isn't in the other cleaners? You could do the same thing with Boretech Eliminator. I can't imagine that the foaming cleaners have some kind of magic chemical in them just because they foam.

Forum Boss: Wipe-Out is VERY different than Boretech Eliminator (which I won't use anymore because I have seen it cause very rapid rust/corrosion in a trigger assembly.)

Wipe-Out actually does have some ingredients NOT found in competitive cleaners. (I have reviewed the chemistry with Wipe-Out's inventor. AND it has an anti-corrosion ingredient, as well as some chemicals designed to reduce fouling with repeated applications. That's all I can say.) The competitive foaming products are very definitely NOT the same.

I don't know, but Gunslick Foaming Bore Cleaner works like a champ. I just stick the tube in the throat and hold it there until the pressure subsides. Never get any foam in the action. Keep the barrel angled downward while it works.

Hmmmm.......AH never mind.

@Forum Boss

"I run 4-6 soaking wet patches through the barrel." May I ask with what solution? Thanks.

I was also wonder what solution you are using for your initial “4-6 wet patches” prior to the application of Wipe Out???

Editor: I've used a lot of different things -- Butch's, Carb-out, even Hoppes 9. Nothing with oil though (no CLPs). I'm mainly just trying to get the loose gunk out -- the stuff that looks gray (or greenish-gray with Varget) on patches. The Wipe-Out is most effective if you get the loose powder residues out first.

A last point which is nice, the stuff is water soluable. It will eat copper and/or a brush quick but simply swirling them in a water bottle keeps them in good shape.
