What to make good use of 30-06 Action

Another plug for the 6.5-06AI. Depending on the brass used, it’s got a bit more capacity than the 6.5 PRC (3-5grs of water capacity), but is still able to approach .264 Win Mag performance while giving up 12 or so grains of water capacity to the Mag.

Call it an old school PRC or a Win Mag lite.

The one I’m messing with now can easily push 140’s about 150-200 fps faster than my 260AI (30” bbl on the 260 and 28” on the 6.5-06) with room to push harder. I built it to play on our LR steel range, so I had the heavier bullets in mind and some pretty impressive speeds are obtainable with 145 or 150’s.

Having some experience with the 783 - I would not spend a cent on it. Sell the POS and put the cash toward a decent rifle in the calibre you want.

Re-22 (best but temp sensitive), H-4831 SC, Imr 7828ssc pretty much in that order but I'm playing with triple nickel now and it's showing real promise!

That’s kind of a loaded question! And I don’t have a ton of experience with either.

The only straight 6.5-06 I’ve messed with was a long time ago and it was a custom hunting rifle built on a Mauser action. Barrel was unknown, but owner thought it was a Douglas. It shot pretty good, plenty good for any game you might shoot with it. No problem getting it under moa groups.

Same with the 260AI. I’ve only spent time with one, a prone gun built on a Wichita action with a Bartlein 8t barrel. I bought it at a really good price and figured it was a bit of a project gun (plus I’m a sucker for old custom actions). It has some issues that need correcting, but it shoots as you would expect for a target gun, good but not “this thing is a laser” good. I’ve only put a couple hundred rounds through it and it is in pieces right now waiting its turn on the project list.

Ive always like the 30-06.
The 30-06 ammo is E..V..E..R..Y..W..E..R..E!!!
its like a semi truck smoke-n down range, hits like one also.
Every time i shoot a 30-06 i think of the lives it saved in American history, the guys who had to run with that B.A.R in Korea ..those were some tough boys.
The M1 Garand is no joke, some may say its the strike of Gods gavel. As his judgment is past.

A nice, heavy, 16lb, mag feed, bench hog would be fun.
It will hardly move.
I would want what ever chamber reamer the CMP uses. Then pick up a 1000rds of match ammo from the CMP..
Once you shoot all that ammo you have plenty of quality brass to work with.
Oh and you cant forget about Clyde, he love that 30-06
