What to make good use of 30-06 Action

I have a brand new Remington 30-06 with a 783 action. I'd like to get a barrel and chassis from Outlier (very cost effective) and do a build for my son to shoot. What will need to be done to the action / barrel in order to set it up for 6.5-06 or maybe 6.5-284?

Second..........Assuming I'll need a decent gunsmith........I'm in Upstate NY........ do you recommend someone?

260AI does very well on a long action. I shoot the Berger 153.5 at a COAL of 3.110". I cannot eject a live round from my short actions and have to pull the bolt.

For 6.5-06 nothing other than barrel is needed. 6.5-284 might need some magazine mods if shooting from the mag.

My vote goes for, the .260 Ai, on the Long action, too !
Hard to beat for, a Low Recoil, "All- Around", Fun on,.. Steel / Huntin', Cartridge !
Love my 6.5 Creed with, 130 gr eld-m's for, big Varmints / Steel Fun and 143 gr. ELD- X's for, a Huntin' Bullet.
Lots of, "Fans" of, the .260 Ai cartridge,.. on Here !

I am one of those 260AI "fans" on here. I had several and it is one of the most accurate rifle cartridges I ever shot. For F-Open, I would bet a tidy sum that with the advent of the Berger 153.5 and now VV N555, you could keep pace easily with a .284 Win with 180 Hybrids at 2800. A 153.5 at 2930 would be formidable indeed at 1000 yards! The ONLY drawback is the fireforming!

That combo does nicely for me in F/Open running 2850ish with 45gr of powder and a decent barrel life.

1. 25-06

All the 25 Cal interest range of ammo is likely to make the market add options we have always wanted.

2. 284 Win

No need to explain. Its just a solid performer with 168-190g bullets for all practice uses.

3. 6.5-284

Because it is just extreme and now we have 153.5 bullets and things gor really interesting. Barrel twist with this one is tricky because the bullets have a wide range of weights.

The 260 and 260 AI with a good bullet puts the hurtin on the animals too!

Its pretty simple for twist, 1:8 handles the 153.5 and 156 bullets even down at sea level perfectly fine and isn't too fast for light bullets. I know some shooting 1:7.5 too, but I prefer 1:8 for mine.

Seeing as how you live in Upstate NY....... maybe a thought to call Hart Barrels and see what you can work out with them. Geography and shipping can be a major stress point these days. Just a thought. Sorry I missed that on my earlier reply. WD

Another vote for 260AI. Incredible performance in a small package. For straight up easy I would do 6.5-06 or 25-06. I love the 6.5-284 as well but the brass is getting harder and harder to find and the price keeps going up. If your going to have to resize cases and turn necks just as well do that on the 6.5-06 where brass is plentiful and cheap.

My vote goes for the old but still effective 25-06. It's the new again kid on the block, and there are a lot of good 25 caliber bullets available.

A 8 or 7.5 twist 25 cal to shoot the 133/135 Berger's or 134 ELD-M in something like a 25-280 Ack Imp would be pretty cool and I think Peterson makes 280AI brass so it'd make for a very easy wildcat and depending on barrel length and powder used be able to send any of those mid 130 25 cals well north of 3100 pretty easily.

I'm not that familiar with how long of a COAL those Rem 783's will allow and anything off of the 06 or 280 case will be somewhere around 3.500 +/- loaded cartridge length.

If COAL is a problem then I'd go 25-284.

Run the numbers through a ballistic app for any of those mid 130 25cals at 3100 and you quickly see why the .257 has become more popular then it's ever been.

If you're looking for something with factory ammo then I'd look at the 25 Creedmoor.
