What to do?

I have several shot outbarrels. 2 chrome moly and 3 or 4 SS. What do you all do with your old barrels?
I hait to take them to the scrap yard but that maybe my only option. Thanks Kim

Well, you could look for someone who has his first lathe coming in ( like me ) who’s looking for barrels to practice chambering.
If you want them I'll ship them to ya. Just pay the shipping cost. I have 4 Large shank stock savage bull barrels and 2 Varmint contour Remingtons. All chambered in 22/250 or 22/250 Ai. If your intersted. TheSavages should have some metal to work with.

You do know that I just posted on "Pay it forward" that I have 2 Savage takeoff barrels that are free to a good home for just that reason! PM me if you would like them.

I sent a shot out 26" 6.5 creedmoor varmint contour criterion barrel to Bamban (Nez Rongero) who basically took at inch off the breech end and re-reamed it to 6.5 grendel... then he gifted that to a senior friend of his to use for deer hunting. There's probably a smith or two out there that could do the same to your shot out bull barrels.

It's usually the throat that gets shot out and not the majority of the barrels rifling. A new chamber and crown (possibly a re-contouring too) on a match grade barrel will probably make that barrel into a shooter again. Sure it's generally not cost effect vs just buying a new barrel for yourself, but when someone who's willing to donate their time and tooling to make new guns from old barrels that might be donated to vet organisations, youth programs, etc....sure seems better than just using it as a tomato stake.

I've made a lot of assorted tooling and lots of drill bit extensions. Don't think of it as a barrel think of it as metal stock. I made a bolt assembly tool last weekend out of a piece of barrel

@RDA72927 I have a shot out Bartlein 6mm 7.5 twist and a Krieger 6.5 mm 8 twist that’s still a blank. The external contour on the Krieger has a lot of gouges in the middle but it’s never been chambered, in fact it’s still in what’s left of the box. It looks like somebody (most likely at whUPS) ran over it with a fork lift and then hit the brakes. I’ve already got a refund on it. It should still chuck and make a fine practice piece. PM your address if you want either or both and I’ll get you a shipping price.

I’ve donated a few to guys going to gunsmithing school. Had a couple rebored & rechambered to another, larger caliber. Finally, I have some in the basement with nothing better to do than take up space.

I know where there is a set of concrete steps that has 6 or 8 barrels in them when I ran short of rebar. A couple of Shilen (select match of course), some Kreigers and a Hart or 2. Gotta think on your feet sometimes.

I'd help you out if you have what I need, a fireform barrel for a bat ds, b or m in 6ppc or 220 beggs. Just trying to help!

Barrels are made out of good steel. It can be used for lots of stuff. Good to machine. I hate to see them thrown away or sold for junk.
