What to do with a Howa action....

So, like a lot of people, i bought a 6cm barreled howa action the other day. I don't need it or really even want it, it was just a good deal.

So now im sitting here pondering what to do with it. I don't care to shoot a 6cm...i have 2 6.5's and my shooting buddy has 2 6cm's if i get the desire to shoot one.

I want to build a 6br, but, alas...it won't feed. So i wanted a 6arc...but, well, wrong bolt face! So now that's got me looking at a 6gt.

Im guessing that 6gt is pretty much going to be the easiest route for a short and stubby round to build? Factory brass, factory loads (not big name, but there is loaded ammo), and made to feed from a mag.

Can anyone talk me out of it? Thinking 26" preferred prefit and drop it into a bravo since there aren't many options for a Howa out there (even though I feel like there SHOULD be)

In order, as suggested above, sell it because you really have no need for it then buy what you really want and get what will work for your ideas.

The 6GT will suffer from a lack of brass over and over since every run will sell out. It is a niche cartridge intentionally downsized very slightly to 'optimize' a case capacity suited to the use of VarGet. Now, if you really wanted two strikes against you, get the 6GT since cases will be difficult to source and VarGet is usually hard to find, especially when there are better powders.:eek:;):D

Personally, better choices would be 6XC or 6x47 Lapua. Both are capable of achieving excellent accuracy with mild recoil and capacity is simply not a point of contention.

Next choice is to buy some MDT 6mm BR magazines built specifically to feed the 6 BR cartridge and the derivatives. These work quite well as I have used them for the last 6 months or so. Price is ritzy but so are the alternatives for feeding. Too bad really since this is greed rearing it's ugly head.

Finally, after selling the Howa, call Jim Borden and order the Super Short action from him.

Umm... that Howa action was a heck of a deal for $249.99 with that trigger. Some folks pay that much for a set of rings. With a 22" barrel, this would make a nice walk-around varmint rifle.

I would just shoot it as a varminter until the barrel wears out then consider a rechambering.

Buy 50 pieces of brass, some 80 grainers, and some RL16 and have fun.

i mean, i'll buy an action specific to the short and stubby stuff. I have a rifle i'm most likely ordering from "The List" tomorrow.

I just hate to sell something i just bought, haha. I've thought about trying to make a single shot plate like ive done with a few rem700's and just make it a single shot. But then lack of stocks...geez

i guess i could just save the money and toss a bell and carlson or the like on it...
 
I bought one too and also am thinking of doing a 6br or 22br. Here’s the two options I’m considering:

Manners stock with PTG bottom metal that will allow AICS mags. Then either use MDT br mags or the primal rights conversion kit. This also involves removing some material from the action to allow the mags to seat properly.
Or, slap it in a XLR element and use either of the mag options. You might need to trim the bolt stop a little but that only takes about 30 seconds. XLR usually has good black friday sale so if I can’t find a Manners I like before that, it’s probably the route I’ll go. Hope this helps
 
Although it was a good deal for what it was, it was a 22" hunting contour barrel that wasn't threaded. You still have to stock it and after that you'd likely end up paying less for something similar or better in a Ruger American Predator already stocked or one of the other makes. I'm not knocking the purchase, just making a personal observation. The Howa is a great action though and well worth building on. For that price the action would be worth it.
 
My recommendation would be to put it in a B&C varmint stock and use it to nail some of those pesky NC ground hogs. Use it as sort of a nice truck gun. The Howa actions and HACT trigger are both really nice factory items. That trigger is very tuneable; on my Mini I have the trigger at a very safe 14 oz, which is about where I want it for a varmint rifle.

I bought it for the action and trigger, not the gun as a whole. I have no interest, really, in 6mm creedmoor.

But, if i was looking for something to shoot as is...it would NOT have been this.
