What tips for 6BR tooled for 95 VLD

I have researched this combination for a quite some time now, but you guys are "the experts!" What tips can you offer to me to save me time. This will be my first custom rifle, and my plans are as follows:

28" Lilja 3 groove or 5C Broughton - 1:8 twist
.274 neck for a tight fit, no-turn neck
I plan on using Berger 95 VLD, possible BIBs or ???
I have a Tooley MBR 1000yd McMillan stock for my Rem 700SA

What modifications/suggestions can you afford me?

A .274 neck is actually a little on the big side. It would serve you better to go with a .271-.272 neck.

The 95 Berger and the 95 BIB require vastly different freebores due to the very short bearing surface on the Berger. For the Berger I wouldn't go above .060 for the BIB .080 on up seems to be the ticket.

I can vouch for the 0.060 freebore on the 95VLD's, don't go over if you want to use these upto or in the lands.

I also shoot the 88LD Bergers and these are in the same ballpark,in terms of length and bearing surface) as the 95gr BIBs from what I hear. With the long neck on the 6BR, you might still be okay using the 88LD and the 0.060 freebore. Don't know about the 95gr BIBs though.

I have about a .080 Freebore. I have loaded and shot the 95gr Berger VLD with good accuracy. BUT... by my calcs, there was only about 0.130" of bearing surface in the neck with the bullets .008" into the lands--at OAL of 2.360".

That is getting very marginal. But it can be done. With the .080 FB you can shoot the 105s, BIB 95s etc. just fine.

FYI, with my .080 Freebore, Lapua loaded 105gr ammo is about .008 away from the lands.

All in all, however, you may be happiest with a .100"+ Freebore and just don't worry about the Berger 95s.

Not sure what you plan on using it for, but why a 28" barrel. I would go with one that finishes at least 30" to squeeze all the velocity you can out of it. Also comes in handy if you need/want to set it back. Personally I would go with the Broughton.

My intended use,s) are punching paper economically, long barrel life and predator/hog/deer control. The 95 Berger's have proved to be pretty effective taking game out to 460 yards. I have a 22-250 that is burning out, and 6BR seems to be the most economical option to meet my purposes.

After reading all the data and results of the 30BR, I might try to swing a switch barrel rig to the 30BR for shooting paper out to 300m. I live in Houston, TX, and I am not aware of any BR competitions or shooting competitions in general that I could enter. I don't really have the time to try and compete at this time anyway, but I am looking to the future and possibilities available to me. The BR family seems to be a no-lose proposition all the way around for my SA receiver.

Later I'll play with some barrel burners for long range play, but I would like to build my confidence at 3-500m first.

28" Broughton 5C
Tooley MBR
Rem 700SA 6mmBR
Jewell 1.5#
Badger 20MOA base, rings and bolt lift

Bullets??? - more research needed I guess

i would not wory about the barrel length 26" is enough in a 6mmBR i have a 26" on my Dasher with the neck i would come back to at least .272 as it is fine with the factory brass i have a 6mmBr with a 271 neck and have fired factory Norma and Lapua in it i use Lapua brass only. I would use .100 as your throat and try a different bullet for game have you ever tried the 105gr A Max they are reccomended for small-medium game by Hornady they work verry well then select the best grouping bullet for targets i use the 107gr Sierra others use the A Max and others prefer the 105gr Lapua or other custom bullets. The rest should be fine.
