What technique is used on the Tikka M595 Master Sporter stock?

Hello all,

This is my very first post on the forum. My question is about the rough textured finish on my Tikka Master Sporter. Does anyone know what this is called, how it’s accomplished? And what tools are used?

The grip is stippled. Search on here and you find some good posts. Typically small time stock makers use a single or multi point tool and move it around the area while tapping it with a mallet or hammer to leave little dents in the wood.
I have no idea if those were done by machine or by hand for that amount of production.

Yup! It’s stippled, then coated with a rubberized paint. I made a copy of one, a few years ago, for Dusty. I started making my own versions of the Master Sporter stock because I like the design elements. The originals were getting a bit pricey and I thought I could tweak some of the aspects and make it better.
Here’s the pic, with an original, and a few more. In the last pic, you’ll see the bound bunch of finish nails I used to do the stippling. Most any pointy object will do the job.

This is quite impressive work. I don’t have the expertise to do the entire stock but I hope to use the stippling technique. You actually had me fooled with the second photo. It took me some time and close examination to realize it was a copy you made and not the actual Tikka factory stock. Without context I wouldn’t have known, and I own two master sporters.

i believe I read a post where a guy took an air hammer, checkered the face of the flat bit, turned the air pressure way down, and was able to copy that pattern pretty well. Anschutz does it too.

Thanks! And he called me “small time”!!!!! I like to use “bespoke stock maker”.

Josh have you tried a needle scaler to stipple with?
Yup! Gary, God bless him, sent me the whole setup. I tried it and couldn’t get it to work right. The bundle of finish nails worked well, was easy to control and didn’t take that long. Maybe a couple hours.
