What size bushing??

Received my gently used 6PPC today;prior owner said it had a .262 neck. I measured several of his fired, unsized brass & they measure .2625. Plan to buy Redding "S" FL bushing die from Midway, but what size bushing should this newbe order? I am seriously considering getting a new 1:13.5 or 1:13.75 Kreiger barrel later this spring & your 6PPC site suggests .271 if I want a no-turn neck. What size reamer would my gunsmith need for this neck? What size bushing should I order,I might as well order both while I am at it)for the no-turn .271 neck? The daunting task of turning necks down to even .265 makes me want to pull the covers over my head & hide. I would probably mess up as many as I got right. The thought of spending $1.75 per round for a fisished brass from Bruno's just isn't in my budget. I doubt if I wold ever seriously compete in matches...........As always,thanks/ Chaz

The best way to arrive at your bushing size is to slide a bullet into a sized case and measure the neck, and then deduct .002 from that for your bushing size.
Having a bushing a .001 over and under the original is a plus...
Don't let the neck turning get you under the covers, it's not a big deal if you go slow and pay attention to details... and have the correct stuff to do it with.
Your handload's will love you for it....

chazgreen: Excellent advice from preacher. My 6ppc is also a .262" neck. Loaded neck dia. with Lapua brass is .260", so I primarily use a .258" bushing, although .001" larger & smaller is also available. A lot of high quality outside neck turning tools out there: I also would balk at paying $1.75 each for pre-turned. If you decide to turn necks, practice on some "scrap" 243, or some other ctg. & you'll see it's really no big deal & it helps fill in the time on these bleak Winter months.:)

Gents/ thanks for passing on your experience. What would you recommend for a no-turn chamber if I have a new barrel made up later this spring,10 inches fresh snow & 24 degrees now)?

Seems I've settled on .269 necks for my 6br's, and I don't mind the turning to be sure they are all consistent.
I had a .272NK barrel from Pac-Nor that needed to be turned to suit me as far as fitting the chamber perfectly..
The .269 will allow you to just get a good clean up on the necks for more of that consistency stuff.........
Toss that cover and get to turning, you'll like what it will do for you :)

Thanks Preacher/ If the bullet is .243 & the unturned Lapua 220 brass wall is .015, that would seem to give me a total of .273. This doesn't allow any room in a .272 chamber.......or is there something I am missing? Thanks again/ Chaz

According to that, if your correct in measuring you'll need to turn those necks down for a perfect fit.. You'll need a minimum of .001- .002 clearance if you stay right on top of it.
You also may have more clearance when the 220's are expanded to .243...

I like to see if a bullet will go into a fired case with no resistance at all and give a little pop sound when they are pulled out of the case.
When I have a case just right I can push a bullet into a fired case and air pressure in the case will push it back up a little bit..

Preacher/ thanks for adding to my knowledge base. The moderator is going to change the site to recommend a no-turn neck chamber to be .274./Chaz
