What Size Bullseye To Shoot At?

When testing loads and shooting for small groups, what size bullseye do you use for say, 300, 400, and 500 yards? I've been shooting at 200 yards and using a 2" red bullseye and that seems to work fine. But I think it will be too hard to see at the longer distances. So, is there a "standard" sizing guideline, like increasing an inch for each hundred yards, or is it something else?

Thanks.

I use a 1/2 inch dot (even at 300yds). I'd use the smallest dot/aiming point my scope will allow, with a 2" (@ 200 yds) I'd feel like I'm shorting myself by allow much room for error.

I agree. It depends on your scope and how much power at your disposal.

"zackly.......

My rule of thumb is a 1 inch per 100 yards with a 20X, and adjust sizes accordingly.

Oh, sorry guys, I should have said what scope I've got--it's a Bushnell Elite 4200 Tactical in 6-24 power.

Thanks for the helpful responses.

I created up this target for 100-200. 1/2" per side diamond. Round spot on top is so you can shoot with 200-yard zero and not rip up the diamond. Extended black lines help you get precise vertical.

At 300 and beyond I like the Birchwood 1.5" or 2" Casey target dots with black diamond centers. With 25X scope you should be able to see the black diamonds in the middle at 500. Here is the 1"-2"-3" selection so you can see relative sizes.

Here are sources for colored dots of various sizes:

I created my own targets using the drawing toolbar in ms excel. I use diamonds in different sizes and I put the crosshairs on the diamond points.

Like some said on here use what your scope will allow you. I always go for the smallest that i can. Their is a place on here that you can find targets and if you have a printer you can print them off. They have saved me a lot of money and have used them for all kinds of different shooting. I printed 2 copies of each and then took them to work and made 50 copies of each ;D and kept 1 of each in a draw for future use. Those free targets are the best ;)

Nice Boss, that lets you print targets at work

Same here, w/24X fine crosshairs I use 3/8" per 100 yards.

I use a slightly different approach with scopes in the 14x to 20x range. I like a 4" or bigger black bull that I align the vertical crosshair on one edge and the horizontal on the bottom or top. That gives me the ability to shoot 4 groups at each bull by placing the bull first in the top right quadrant for group one, the bottom right for group two, the bottom left for group 3 and last the top left for group 4. If your rifle is sighted in to hit approximately the center of your reticle then the bullet holes are outside of the black and easy to see. Tom

I have used the paper #$ss holes at 100 and 200 depending on the scope.
