What Should I Expect When I Get My "Tuned-Up" Rifle Back?

I am waiting patiently to get my Savage 12 LRPV .223 back from my gunsmith. When it was new, this rifle shot some tight groups at 300 yds. but, overtime and about 3,500 rounds, those groups grew considerably. I will be getting a new Benchmark Competition barrel, Rifle Basix Target trigger, trued up action and the existing HR Precision stock will be bedded.
I'm hoping it will be considerably more accurate than when it was new. Are my expectations realistic?

They should improve over FACTORY, BUT not nescessarily useing the same load. Back to square 1 with load developement.

sounds like you will have a great rig . what did the factory rifle shoot group wise at 300yds. ?T.R.

Once broken in, it should easily shoot better than 1/2 MOA.

Just remember, each barrel is a rule unto itself. Treat it just like a new caliber.

Well hopefully your gunsmith won't use "used" parts like my guy did and still charge full price!
It was like he beat the parts together with a hammer!

It took 3 months worth of returning it every week to get it right, AND I had to nag the guy every other day just to get it back by the weekend so I could see if he finaly got it right!
I'm still trying to find the right load, he say's it's me!! But I know it was his work!!!

If he treats me right the next time I ask for a build I might finish paying for this last one!

Such "service", and you're already talking about using him again? That's a definition of insanity.

Yeah, still got $50 to go, might take a few weeks, but he'll git it if it shoots good

Be sides the feller was askin what he might expect.
My gunsmith Clem is a 4rd cousin on my Ma's side, married too my sisters husbands brothers daughter.
His whole barn is full-a gun stuff an parts an such.
He uses wood glue instead of Acraglas for bedding, it releases easy an he saves a few bucks that way, and it only has to be scrapped out once a year cause he paints it with shellac after it dry's good.
He says if I can't git it on paper by the end of the week, he's gonna rub some sand paper on the muzzle, sumpthin about maby it's the crown,,

sorry for getting back to this so late . that factory rifle for 1/2 min was a pretty good shooter at 300yds. . as someone mentioned earlier you should do better then the factory gun . i would say 1/4 moa would be the norm not knowing who smithed the rifle and the best of componets being used. please you don't need to mention the smith on my account . have fun with it and take these kind words of advice as once qouted to me. "we all have that one great target we carry around in our pocket to show the guys when the time is right . the trick is to have one bad target and a pile of good ones . T.R.
P.S. hi butch hope things are well .

Therifler....Are you saying that he should expect 3/4 inch groups at 300 yards when he gets the Savage back???? Good luck with that!!!!! James

I would expect to get some groups around .25moa at 100yds. Providing your willing to do the work to find out EXACTLY what the new barrel wants to eat.
Dragging that .25moa out to 300yds is another story.
I've done it on several occassions with a factory Sav barrel in 204R but ALL the Gods need to be smiling on those days.
That factory barrel was really hummin at that point in its life and luckily I stumbled upon the perfect diet.

allow me to clarify my answer .with a 223 it will be hard to get 3/4" groups regularly. i got my posts mixed up and thought we were talking about 22-250 . sorry for any sleepless nights i might have caused for anyone . T.R.
