What semi-auto rifle gives good accuracy?

Starting in July, new laws will make it more onerous to buy semi-auto Firearms where I live. I'm thinking of buying a Rimfire rifle to be used as a range toy trying to get small groups. What non-22lr rifle would you suggest, with reliability & accuracy in mind? Budget under a thousand. I have a 10/22 22lr, and a 597 22 mag. Must be semi-auto...

The 10/22 is the most popular semi IMO, and there are tons of mods you can do to improve accuracy like swapping barrels, trigger groups, stocks, etc. Range buddy built a 10/22 with a Feddersen barrel and Archangel stock, and a 36x scope, can cut playing cards in half. I built one just like his after shooting his and cutting a card in half but have not spent the time to find the preferred ammo for it. Cost to build was about $400 excluding the cost of the 10/22 action and scope. I used new actions ( I have a stock pile of new 10/22 barrels/triggers/stocks never shot) but if you have a 10/22 on hand, or buy used. Check out rimfirecentraldotcom for tons of info.

I think the OP was asking about centerfire rifles in semi-auto. And if that is the case, I'd say that one of the custom built AR's with a quality barrel seem to rule the roost in the accuracy department. (no, I don't have one). jd

Not sure what OP actually wants.
Says rimfire, non-long rifle, semi. Not a lot of choices in 22mag or 17rf and he has one already.

AR with a varmint or match barrel is a good option for most of the possibilities.

Or is there no accurate model of these? I have a tricked out 10-22, but i dont seen to use it much. I was thinking a bit more powerful rifle would be more fun.

Ill say that a dedicated upper for an ar is way more accurate than a tricked out 10/22. Either a cmmg pattern rifle or one from Compass Lake. As far as a non 22lr rimfire upper, Ray Vin makes one in 22 mag, and some other company makes one in .17hmr but the name escapes me.
Ive never shot the Ray VIn but Ray Brandes makes top quality stuff and is an active shooter and competitor.

If money for 'tricked out' is available maybe getting CLE or Keystone to chamber one of their 22 match uppers in magnum would be possible???

Or buy one and get someone local to re-chamber?

Volquartsen 22 Mag heavy barrel. Mine is super accurate with the right Jacketed ammo.

You really want to switch things up a Lever gun in 357 mag is very fun and accurate. If you watch a cowboy shoot you would swear those things are full auto. Just putting something to think about out there.

I really like my 22magnum Volquartsen. They are not cheap, but it is very accurate with the right ammo. I keep a 3rd gen night vision scope on mine for calling predators at night, but I have slapped a day scope on it and shot it for groups and was impressed. Many people complain about the accuracy of the CCI Maxi Mag +V, but the rifle I have loves them and they are a killer.
This rifle has the barrel screwed directly to the receiver and there is really not much customizing that needs to be done...good thing considering the price. I think if you had one you would be very happy with it.

A friend of mine has a High grade AR in 17 HMR, it shoots very good, but it is above your price limit. The only problem with accuracy with a Non 22lr, Ammo makes don't make Match ammo in 22 Mag, 17HMR, etc.
Volquartsen 22 mag would be best for accuracy. Savage make a A22 and A17 CZ makes a 512 in 22 mag.

I have one of the Savage A17 17 HMR's, mine is the Target Sporter model which has a larger contour barrel and laminated stock. I've been pretty impressed with mine and it shoots surprisingly quite well. The trigger in mine was terrible out of the box, it was very heavy, even set to its lightest position, and when you pulled the trigger it felt like two rocks were rubbing together. I spent a couple hours tuning on it and was able to turn it into a fairly decent trigger and I've got it down to around 2lbs with just a tiny bit of pretravel. I've had some people tell me the trigger in their Savage A17's was good right out of the box so maybe I just got a bad one. I know Jard makes a whole new drop in trigger assembly for the A17's so there must have been more than just mine that had crappy triggers in them.

Overall, the Savage A17 is a pretty decent little gun for not a lot of money, even the HB target model with laminated stock, is relatively light-ish, and mine actually shoots a little better than my bolt action 17 HMR.

In your price range I’d point toward the Magnum Research 22 mag. If you want to upgrade later on, many 10/22 components interchange.

I have a Volquartson .17 HMR that is pretty cool - probably near or just a above your top budget. I forget the name of the manufacturer - but another company makes the .17 HMR in an A/R version - which is another interesting option. I'd look at the .17WSM. My buddies have them and they are the rimfire meow.
