What scope magnification for a 300 NMI out to a mile...?

Any good variable up to 20-35x will do just fine. I have a NXS 5.5-22x on my 7-300 Win Mag that I shoot out to 1400 with no issues. I don't think the extra 360 yards would make any difference. Will be doing a mile here in the early fall, so we will see!

I use a Valdada Recon G2 4.8-30X on my 300 Norma AI and have shot 3 shot groups from 8” to a little over 12” at 1875 yards(1.07 Miles). 150 MOA of adjustment too. No problem getting beyond a mile

You’ll need somewhere around 50 MOA up from a 100 yard zero to get to a mile. I’ve done it with a tract 34MM and an old gen 1 Razor with plenty of elevation to spare on a 20 MOA rail.

You can easily quarter a milk jug at a mile with a 5.5-22 Nightforce, plus they have 100 MOA on tap, so no reason to not run a 40 MOA base.

Here's jugs at 1920:

Here's a tom that waddled through my scope just under a mile:

I just happen to have one for sale in the classifieds.....;)

My primary question should have been a bit more focused. I am more on how much magnification out to a mile with my 300NMI.
I have two accurate rifles in process. One is the aforementioned rifle, the other is for my 257 Banshee with will be first choice Rockchuck hunting rifle. I have a thousand of the 131gr Blackjacks.
I understand you cannot hit what you cannot see clearly, and that magnification goes up or down depending on the mirage. As well, the size of the target and whether it is alive or steel.
My thoughts are a 5-40X56 March, and a Sightron SIII 10-50x60LRIRMOA-H which is Illuminated.
Which would go where...?

well im a spoiled old guy with old eyes when it comes to scope power. i regularly shoot at 1K but that is farthest.. I would not want to be without my NF Comp -55x- when i do this. So thats what ill definately use if i ever try a mile. Er- thats inless i obtain a march 60 or 80 power by then. i usually can see and aim at a 1 1/2 “ dot at 1000 with the NF. that said i can see good enough at 25x through a leupold VXIII 8.5 x 25 to hit well at 700 yds with a ruger 77. probably could do ok at 1000 but ran out of elevation.

I’d check the useable elevation on both as it will bite you if not appropriate for the task.

I’d trade magnification for elevation all day when ELR is in play.

Clarity you don’t want to compromise.

I have a Trijicon 10 Mile scope that has beautiful clarity and illumination that can be seen in the day time {unlike my illuminated March that needs a very overcast day or early/late daylight to be of any use} as well as being able to select from either red or green.
All for just a fraction under $2K.
Currently being used on a 280AI F Class rifle and at a 1’000yds you can almost see the holes in the target and I would think for sure you would see the splash on a steel target.

A 5-40x56 should be more than enough. With my 78 year old eyes, I regularly shoot 24”- 30” steel at 2000 yards using 15-20 power without difficulty and don’t use much more, maybe increase to 25 if mirage allows, when shooting 2 miles.

I am going to start 1000+yds with my March 5-40x56. If these old eyes need more I have a Sightron SIII 10-50x60 moa-h Illuminated model. If that ain't enough, out comes the March 8-80x.
Hopefully, Option 1 works.

If you get the chance, look through each.
Some people especially the older folk say each persons eyes is different in how their eyes react to say
...The coatings used on the glass
I do fine at over a Mile with my Kahles 6-24 rarely needing 24x
I use the 0.2 subtensions more than anything to gauge and measure the size of targets at distance
Its better than guessing.
If you're going to be shooting groups at 1 mile, then of course get the highest magnification that allows you to see without it darkening to the point it is hard to see (one reason I stuck with 24x)
I sold all my 36x's
Lower power/top teir glass
is better than
Higher Power/ lower quality glass

Thank you all for the input. I was not sure how much is enough, and how much might be too much.

Good answers, and God Bless.

Rich
