What rests are most FClass guys shooting???

I don't plan on shooting any FClass but I would like a non-joystick rest that I can shoot 1k yards with. I just sold an SEB that couldn't get me there and I have come to the conclusion that I don't like the joystick rests. Nothing wrong with them just not for me.

Majority of the shooting I do it steel and clays at 500m and shorter but the 500 is elevated to the point the shorter rests won't work so I figure the 1k yd F class guys could point me in the right direction.

Thanks.

I guess I don't understand your statement. Are you trying to go from 100 yards to 1000 yards using the adjustability of your rest, without touching your scopes elevation knob?
If all you are trying to do is shoot clays on a bank at 500. It seems that the joystick rest would give you the quickest and most horizontal adjustment over the standard non-joystick rest with the windage knob.

Check out http://drgreenlawmachining.com/home. His craftsmanship and service are excellent.

+ 1. I have one of these and although I only shoot out to 200-250 I think it is the best kept secret out there. Also he is very easy to talk with and even easier to do business with.

My F/Class rest is one of those 24 lb. Caldwell Rock rests. It's not the best but it works for me. Caldwell doesn't make them anymore, the newer one I believe is 15 lbs.

No, I use the scope elevation knob. Your assessment is what I thought and exactly why I wanted/tried the rest. Results, I didn't like it.

The most common rests that I see on the line are, Rock BR, Sinclair, Viper, Bald Eagle. Joysticks: Firecontrol, SEB, Shadetree, Farley.

Ditto on the recommendation for Dan Greenlaw. He made me a special mariner's wheel and the service was fast and courteous and the price fair. Check out the pic's on his web site. He makes some gorgeous rests and special orders don't upset him. Incidentally, I have a very nice "no-name" rest base with a windage top but for bench-rest and F-class I use my Shadetree Engineering joystick rest with a 3 inch edgewood stiff bag. I like that combo.

I have shot with both the Seb 1 and the Neo and like them both with the Neo being easily the best joystick rest I have used. Recently I have just had delivered a Sinclair Competition BR rest and am very impressed with its manufacture and how easy it is to use in f-class competitions. It has plenty of adjustment for the ranges I shoot 300 to 1000 yards and beyond. Look here for info http://www.sinclairintl.com/shooting-rests-bipods/shooting-rests-tops/shooting-rests/sinclair-competition-shooting-rest-br-prod39322.aspx

The only thing this rest needs is longer leg screws and f-class feet. I have got a set of Sinclair f-class feet and drilled and tapped out for the 1/2" x 20 tpi to suit the leg screws. Now I just need to buy a length of SS 1/2" UNF running thread to make the longer leg screws and increased adjustment possible. I shoot on some mounds that are pretty rough and need quite a bit of levelling adjustment for the front rest.

Most are using Seb V1, Seb Neo's, Farley's, Farley Compact tops on misc bases, Sinclair, Vipers, Caldwell, and some misc.

At this point, the majority, maybe slight though, are using a joystick of some sort...

I've had both joystick rest manufactures they are quick and nicely made . I just wonder about these heavy long range guns on them . I just sold my NEO 2ND generation rest while it is a very nice rest I wanted simplicity . Last night I talked to Bob Pastor and ordered a new Viper .It appears well made simple design and also looks to be a rock solid design . I say enjoy the ride and fine what works for you and your application . Milage may vary.

I ordered a tripod type (made by viper) and was looking at the viper one piece base model. how do you adjust for windage on those, buy a hart rear rest or just push the bag a little,

I wonder how the guys owning a viper do it

thanks

Jeff

I don't think a firecontrol is even legal in f-class and definitely not in bench rest, and I wouldn't use it if it was, there very crude at best!

I guess that I'm not getting the picture.

I shoot in a varmint league that is somewhat F-class-ish. We're allowed to shoot from the ground or a portable varmint bench. I shoot from a bench...neck problems.

Even with the targets being uphill, the varmint bench pointing slightly downhill and a tall rear bag, my Farley has more than enough vertical adjustment to get me on target.

Not trying to defend my choice of a joystick, just saying that I don't understand what your issue was.

Wayne, are you thinking of the firecontrol with rear rest attached? That wouldn't be legal, but the regular one that uses a seperate rear bag is. I see alot of these used by people starting out. I started with one myself, then got a Farley. WOW what an improvement! The firecontrol is now a loaner rest.

Yes sir that is what I was thinking of, I didn't realize they made a fire control just front rest. I myself started off with a Caldwell BR rest and I still take it to the matches for a loaner and backup, I now use a Ken Fulgham rest of Randolph Machine and I am very happy with it! I myself don't care for the joy stick rests for 1K br but I really like them for other disciplines and do not understand what the op's real problem really is, because the joysticks are the best there is for point and shoot?

I'll give you another name: do a web search for Cowan rests. Very good story behind these rests, made by high school students, proceeds go back into the program. They do beautiful work, the price is ridiculously low for the quality, and it's a good cause.

Earlier this year there was a article and pictures on this website about a shooter who had won one of the major 600 yd competitions and the front rest he used was a Caldwell Firecontrol. Because of this article I bought one and have been very happy with it, often shooting better than other shooters with the more expensive rests and up to 600 yds the distance where I usually shoot. It may not be one of the best ones out there but for the money it is hard to beat. I got it at Optics Planet for about $170 and free shipping. Sure, someday I would like to have a high dollar front rest but the Firecontrol is a great initial entry joy stick front rest. The fact that you thought the Firecontrol only came in the one piece front/rear rest makes me think that you do not know that much about or have seen or used the Firecontrol front only rest. You might want to try it and may even find out that it is not that bad.

OP - If you are having a problem getting elevation with your rest due to terrain, use a board under the rest, replace your rest feet with longer ones, use a smaller rear bag, or a combination of all.
