What Reloading scale are you using?

Just wanted to take a overall look at what scales competitors are using. I reload primarily for 600 and 1000 yd shooting. Currently have a Denver Instruments MXX-123 with a Omega trickler.

What are you using?

Thanks for the input.

I use the Smartreloader iSD Automatic Powder Dispenser

I have the RCBS 10-10 and trickler but rarely use it after I got the smartreloader

Charlie,

That is the direction that I think I am headed. Just need to hit the lottery to afford the scale :-)

One friend has a new prometheus, but I couldn't see having a car payment just for a scale. Am gonna have to swallow pretty hard for a GD 503.

A tuned RCBS 502 with a Targetmaster automatic trickler.

Chuck,

I too am using the MXX 123 and am continually fighting a zero drift. Calibrating the scale before each use, zeroing between charges and isolating the unit from electronic noise has helped as well as setting the scale to its "very unstable" setting reduces the drift. After all that, it is still there, just not as bad.

The sartorius GD 503 looks like the way to go but they are pretty pricy. Maybe there will be one in the budget next year.

just my take but save your money..... you already have a set-up that can weigh to one or two individual kernels of powder and you could spend $500. to $1000. on the fancy scales only to gain maybe 1 single kernel of "perfect". That Omega trickler you have makes quick work of it too and in under 30 seconds you can drizzle up precision loads. Some folks get along fine with those scales and some haveendless drift problems and if that's the case after trying all the usual fixes then maybe it has to go but I would do some test first to see if some of the drifting in the 2 nd decimal place is not falsely shaking your confidence. most guys hit the reset before each throw when using digital scales and that is pretty normal.

If you want to separate yourself from some money and not break the bank alot of guys are using hand-tuned agate bearing beam scales that cost about $125.? and those are even more accurate than the ones that some current long-range record holders are using. Being a gear freak I often need to be pulled back from the edge too Lol....

I have an old RCBS plastic body 10/10 and a Chargemaster 1500. Every charge coming off of the Chargemaster is checked on the 10/10. Most of the loads will be exactly on the line. Any that fall outside of 1/2 the width of the needle get dumped back into the Chargemaster's powder tube. I use the drinking straw mod and a line conditioner on the electric scale.

Edit: For those charges that are slightly over the line on the 10/10, I will try to tap a few kernels out of the powder pan and weigh it again. But, often as not, too many fall out and it comes up short. I find it is faster to just dump them and weigh out a new one. Here is my process: Dispense a charge with the electric scale. Pour it in the powder pan for the 10/10 and hit the dispense button again. Look at the needle on the 10/10. If it is right, then put the powder into the case, if not, dump it back in the hopper. Move the charged case to the loading press and transfer the powder from the electric scale to the pan on the 10/10. Seat the bullet and place the loaded round into the ammunition box. Repeat the process.

There are really several things going on almost at once. The Chargemaster is dispensing a charge, the 10/10 is confirming the weight and I am putting the powder in the case and seating a bullet. Sort of like a Flow Chart. The only pause is caused when a charge comes up wrong on the 10/10 and has to get dumped back into the hopper.

I know both the scales are only accurate to 1/10 of a grain but I feel better with both of them agreeing on the weight.

I just upgraded from a Gen 1 Prometheus to a Gen 2 Prometheus, it will dispense with in 1/3 of a kernel every 10-12 seconds, I can't seat a bullet and not have the next charge waiting on me.

I use the new-to-me Chargemaster 1500 with the mods to speed up delivery and a cast body 10-10 (80s vintage) to verify.
Used the 10-10 exclusively for years though.

Well several years back, I lucked into an AND HF-300 lab scale that had been purchased for a particular lab project and I swear, they never used it, it was like brand new. got it for $114! The thing is great, I wouldn't pay retail for it, not that its not worth it, but $1300-$1500 is a little steap!!! But it is a great scale and settles fast and is rediculously accurate,,,
