What primers do you fella's use in competition?

I see this coming several year ago. I got 25,000 wolf for $11.00 a 1000. A friend who stop shooting sold me 15,000 205 m and 10,000 CCI. I stocked up on Varget also. Then I found H4350 shot better in a dasher. I have a three year supply of Hybrids. Now Bart has his new bullet. Stock up sell what doesn't work. Larry

I use the BR-4"s because they always go "bang"....can't say the same for the Wolf's....some guys I know have had a LOT of problems with these, from misfires to "flintlock" type delays....not what I'm looking for in 1000 yd BR.

All the hang fires and misfires I have found to be gun or loader problems. Too much head space primer not being seated properly Gun problem tricked up lite fire pin or weak spring or firing pin too short. Larry

Jon -

When viewing equipment list from the IBS-600/1000 results, the CCI-450 is very dominate the primer of choice.
Personally I stopped testing primers several years ago now, and use CCI-450's exclusively. All done and said more times then not they yielded the least vertical on the target no matter what powder/bullet combinations. Enough of the time that I stopped using anything but them.

I recently experienced the hang fire in a 6.5x47l using Wolf primers. I used the primers in some fouling round and every one did it. I snapped and remember reading about that problem here.
I had since bought some Tula primers and thought I would see if they gave the same hang fire. Every primer fired on time and gave me better groups in a primer test.

Same rifle, same cases, same Lee primer tool used on both the Wolf and Tula. The Wolf sleeve and Tula sleeve both had the same markings on them.

For my L-R primers it is Wolf/Tula only. In my S-R cases 308 Palma and 300 Blk out I use CCI #41 in the gas rifle, but I have used both Wolf and CCI #450's with equal success in the BO. The Palmas get 450's only, but I'm going to re-visit that with Wolf primers in a head to head comparison.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

Yes, it is imperative that proper firing pin contact and depth of strike are made with the Russian primers. Do that and they are outstanding. In a prior thread I had recounted how I had taken known good brass (Lapua) which I had been shooting in my 6BR with Tula primers, then decided to level the primer pockets with a Sinclair primer pocket leveler - the type that won't allow you to go deeper than the intended stop point. After leveling the pockets, 1/3 of the rounds failed to fire on the first firing. There was less than .001" clearance between the case shoulder and chamber so excessive headspace was not a role in this case - just taking a few thou off the bottoms of the pockets was all it took for this BAT model B. Changed brass with same lot of primers and no more duds. I also fired that "leveled" pocket brass in the same BAT with Federal primers and no duds.

Strangely, I've had more problems with BR-2 and BR-4's than with the Wolf or Tula.

Only thing that is a little annoying with the Russian primers is that they need a little extra "oomph" when seating and my thumb gets tired from time to time.

Same here, i've had hang fires and misfires with CCI BR primers (small and large), never had trouble with the CCI 450.......Never had a lick of trouble with any of the others (Wolf/Tula/Federal, etc). Maybe i just had bad batches of CCI BR primers.

I have ignited over 50 bricks of CCI 200 in my 7-08's. Never had one that failed to do it's job.

Searcher,
Had the exact problem with Wolf LR primers in a Gilles/Ross action. Came to the exact same conclusion. They work just fine in my Rem 308

I am just taking a survey and I really want to know what the actual competitors prefer

Anything that says Federal on the box......

Savagedasher,

We all use the same smith and headspace is kept to .001"-.0015".....we all shoot 6x47's and the cases could be interchangeable if desired; that's how close his tolerances are....most guys have their own reamers. Two guys use the K&M primer tool with the gauge so I don't think primer seating is an issue. And guys have messed with the firing pins also......too much to worry about with the Wolf's.....if you don't have any confidence in your primer going "bang", you're probably not going to shoot your best; thus the reason for the switch.
