What primer for 284 ?

Bought a used Kelbly Atlas chambered in 284 and I have read about every post on here. Wealth of information on this site. See a couple primers listed but wondering what your using.

CCI BR-2, Fed210gmm, Wolf LR. I’ve had good loads with each. Some powder/charge weight/bullet/neck grip/seating depth favor one or the other. They all work but you will have to develop the best load in your gun with your chosen primer but starting with one of the above you will be fine (wolfs are not available at present or for the foreseeable future unless you by from an individual)

My favourite with 284s are the PMC/Tula/Murrom/Russian primers.
They are very slightly larger and harder to seat than other primers, but since the 284 is known for loosening primer pockets, these primers might let you get a few more reloads out of your brass.
They are also about the right strength, being on the milder side which works well with the 284 case.

They are a bit tougher than some other primers so some firing pin/spring combinations (particularly older Bats with their lower firing pin energy) don't work well with the Russian primers but when I was running a Kelbly 284, it liked these primers and so do all my Barnard actions I am using now.

Wolf primers in my Shehane. They work so well I never tried anything else. Sorry, I forgot I used CCI 200's to fireform and they worked well also.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

In the vein of Rdavie’s post, if the pockets open up but you want to add more life to your cases try the Sellier and Bellot primers; S&B primers have the tightest fit of any primer I’ve used. They worked well in the 6.5 x55 Imp case with RL-23.

These are my go to primers in 280AI and I intend to stick with them when I switch to a 284 Shehane later in the year.

S&B for me. Unfortunately they are made of unobtanium and have disappeared from the world market.

For those who aren't aware ; S&B stopped importing all primers into the U.S. several years ago . And when any available supply is gone , it's gone . Which could have occurred by now . I ran out of SRP's a year ago , and still have one box of 1,000 LRP's left .

Wow! Sorry to hear that. For 7 RSAUM the S&B is my go to primer!

I called S&B in Minnesota because I wanted to get accurate info on both the primers , and 54r cases . The person in Sales and Marketing gave me what I posted , and it busted my chops too . They were my "go-to" also , for two different rifles . What ya gonna do ? :(

Did they give any reason? Poor sales?

Actually they did . Sales were moderate , and they ( S&B ) were satisfied with sales , but the Obama Admin sent them a letter saying their Tariffs were going to be raised , and "They" were looking more closely at firearms related import products . For "protection" of the American manufacturers & markets . Strange ; how the Obozo Admin managed to eliminate the three best comp primers in the world from American shooters , in less than three years . "To protect Us". From what , I ask ?

Though not a 284, I was at the range last Sunday with my custom 30-06, and Winchester LR Primers gave fantastic results with Reloader 16 and 168 grn Berger’s.

I tried theM on advice from a friend.

I went back to the Winchester LRP for my M-N Open rifle , and had to drop a couple tenths off the load , but got excellent results also , with both a 185 OTM , and the 200 Hybrid . Now ; If I could just learn to read the wind a little better at 1,000 . :p

Didn't know 185s or 200s were made for the .284. Finally making heavier .284 bullets.

Please re-read S-L-O-W-L-Y .......I was referencing the primer usage in my M-N ( Mosin - Nagant ) Open rifle . As were those referencing 30 / 06 rifles . That's all . Sorry you got confused . ;):D:D
